Got to see this on the Somewhere Back in Time tour" last year. Here's a nice photo from the show. First time I smuggled a camera into a concert.

Awesome.

BTW, if anyone is interested in the best Iron Maiden tribute album, go get Slave to the Power (new window). It's awesome!

That's a worthy Sunday offering. Adding my random pic from the Ohio show this year. Great remake of the Powerslave tour.

Iron Maiden is awesome. Unfortunately I missed their concert when they came to Massachusetts in June. I still regret not going.

/Saw them for the Seventh Son tour

My favorite Maiden song. Saw them play this one in Chicago last June.

Hey, where is that from? Mine is from Boston (Mansfield) last August

On Christmas Day this year, Iron Maiden will be 35 years old and the only band aside from The Rolling Stones that's been around longer than 25 years to have had every single album chart on Billboard.

But you still can't call them mainstream or sellouts.

UP THE IRONS!!!!

another sunday heavy metal house call, another lameass old "metal (?)" (citation needed) band...

can we please have some real metal on here? otherwise, i will feel eternally obligated to complain.

/this is as close to trolling as i will go, i promise
//i'm actually just a self-hating liter, so i understand!

normally I'd agree but Iron Maiden are most definitely metal. some of the other bands that have been submitted as part of this Sunday heavy metal shiat? no so much.

You're a troll, that's what I understand.

I saw iron Maiden in Huntsville, AL on the Powerslave tour with Twisted Sister opening. Since then I haven't had the opportunity to see them since. The last chance I had they pulled out of Ozzfest before Nashville so there went that.

Not a huge fan.

However, Dickinson is a great singer and I always liked listening to his comments between songs. Good entertainer.

That was from Cuyahoga Falls, OH. this year. Great show, I felt like I was 16 again. Wish I could have seen them in Boston in my old hometown, that would have been wicked pissa. :-)

What do you consider real metal? IM was as metal as they come in the day, and still are. We could have a Sunday morning Deadstar Assembly/Limp Bizkit style poser metal thread for you if you like? :-)

gruelurks: What do you consider real metal?

I think the current definition of "real metal" is a fat, bald guy grunting incoherently, puncuated by shouts of DDIIIEEEEEE over and over again. The "music" is super-fast riffing, fast drums, and no solos.

For some unfathomable reason, this is considered cool.

/my lawn, get off of it

you must be referring to shiat like metalcore and/or deathcore. don't let the names fool you, that is not metal. there is more 'core' (as in Hardcore) in there than metal and that is unfortunately what is popular these days.
death metal, thrash metal, and even black metal, which also contain super-fast riffing, fast drums, and some pretty insane vocals, also include guitar solo's by some of the world's most talented guitarists, and if you think otherwise your a twat who probably thinks the hardest metal band out there is metallica.

/get out of my moshpit, geezer.

gruelurks 2008-12-08 12:48:21 AM
I see bands like Dark Tranquillity, Children Of Bodom, High On Fire, Equilibrium, In Flames, Insomnium, etc... making waves in the metal vein. Call me old, but some of the 'core shiat doesn't strike me a metal, but it does draw roots from it IMO.

But fark, I don't really care to argue at almost 40 years old anymore. I'm not apart from digging Mudvayne to Slipnot to Nightwish to Type O Negative (+10 for TON). If it sounds good and heavy, and the generation that drives the music today digs it, let them define it and grow it as we did when we were kids. I wish I hadn't been so closed minded 10 years ago at some of the really good shiat coming out that I dismissed as not 'metal'. fark, who am I kidding? I'm no more metal now than I was when I was 18 lol.

TeddyBallGame [TotalFark] 2008-12-08 12:56:28 AM
One post script to this conversation about "Metal" is that not all of the bands submitted to the SHMHC get greenlit making some of this argument about genres of Metal moot.

Remember that the music tab is shared with Blender.com and delving into sub-genre after sub-genre narrows the fan base.

So weather you're a fan of Queensryche or Cannibal Corpse or to you Metal lived and died at the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", it's all good. Relax and enjoy the music or go to youtube and watch whatever you want.

mno 2008-12-08 01:27:57 AM
I saw Iron Maiden on this tour, at Radio City Music Hall. Queensryche opened. My first and last metal show, and it RAWKED.

Briant73 2008-12-08 09:58:21 AM
Saw them in Ohio this past summer for the first time, great show.

If there are new metal groups that actually can sing and play send a list.

boy did i drop the ball by not coming back by here... where do i start?

Lumber Jack Off

while i still don't agree on IM, that's pretty much what i meant

TeddyRooseveltsMustache

and you sir, are a mustache

synep

think more along the lines of march 11th

gruelurks

no limp bizkit, no thank you. "IM was as metal as they come in the day" - key words "in the day". not my day, month or year. i don't typically associate the metal i listen to that i guess is considered modern to be terribly similar at all to metal of old. it's like two different genre's entirely, and for what i consider metal to be, the latter is definetely not metal.
(i'm looking directly at you, 1981-1989)

so anyway, forgive my very introverted opinion, but i just don't see how you could go from, say "iron maiden" to "in flames", for example.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache

how many troll's do you see clarify their posts in a rational way?

To not be able to draw a connection/line from Iron Maiden in the 80's to In Flames in the late 90's only proves to me that you are still wet behind the ears. :-)

Melodic, harmonic guitar solos? Check.
Galloping, epic bass lines? Check.
Intricately arranged songs, with multiple time changes? Check.
Singing style...ok you got me there.

But I will agree with you that what is considered metal today doesn't match what was back in the 80's. Same as what I grew up with in the era, I looked back at the 70's bands and said? Metal? Are you kidding me? Thankfully metal continues to evolve and live on across generations. I'd hate to still be stuck with Ratt, Poison, and the other 'metal' bands that dominated the era.

your ability to to make a point and rationalize on common beliefs stumps and angers me!

i suppose the sound of maiden is just not "heavy"... perhaps though by the standards set in those times (i'm a youngin, after all), it was heavy in comparison. just not anymore.

Madbassist1 [TotalFark] 2008-12-11 01:14:32 PM
Riding an open E (or low D) or (god farking forbid, B) does not make a song heavy...just muddy. Insane speed does not make a song heavy, just rushed.

I hate to sound like an old fart, but that shiat just all sounds the same to me.
