good.

Now go away from public life Mr. Jefferson. You're a disgrace.

Dufus [TotalFark] 2008-12-07 01:37:33 AM
As a resident of one of the adjacent parishes in Louisiana I can only wonder what took them so long.

On another note, a number of years ago I was in NOLA to take my mother for a doctor appointment. While waiting for her to finish with her tests I decided to grab a donut at the shop down the street. Jefferson was shaking hands in a reelection bid and cornered me asking for my support. Even though I informed him that I was not from his district I couldn't escape shaking his hand. It took three days to get rid of the slimy feeling on my hand even after soap and hot water. I even had to eat my donut with my left hand and I checked to make sure my wallet was intact after he left.

/shudders just remembering

This remeinds me of when I applide for a job as a spell-checker and they gave it to some black guy named Carl insted because of affermative action. And yet somehow because I dont think he got the job on his own merrits I'm the rascist? LOL. And than I had to get a worse job where I dont even have a dental plan which is NOT cool because my daughter Lisa needs braces. Its hard out here for a white MAN but I shell overcome.

Yeah, but he still got about 45% of the vote. I don't understand how the fark that happened. The man was caught with money his farking fridge - how could anyone possibly vote for him? That's one of the (many) problems with Louisiana - so many politicians are corrupt, but their constituencies are seemingly okay with that.

This is good. They're picking up a man with degrees to understand some of the most important issues facing the US today. Unless through some record-breaking feat of douchebaggery he out-douches his predecessor, I'll probably be rooting for him in 2010...

Weaver95: I don't think Jefferson got a lot of party support this time around. that probably had a lot to do with his defeat.

He didn't get any last time either -- he defeated another Democrat in the elections, and she was the one the party was backing. The main reasons he won last time:

1. Republican support -- they figured he'd be convicted well before his term was up and expelled from Congress, and it's easier to win a special election than a general election, especially in heavy Dem territory. They didn't figure that the legal battle over whether or not they should have raided his Congressional offices would delay the trial as long as it did.

2. The other candidate criticized the police response to Katrina, and the local sheriff ran a grassroots campaign for Jefferson.

I think that's because they've changed the election rules.

Previously, they did mixed-party primaries -- the two candidates receiving the most votes went on to the runoff election. Many times both candidates in the final election were Democrats.

I don't mean this as a "But but..." What I mean is that, in all seriousness, everyone thinks Congress is corrupt, but my guy is awesome (and the rest are just assholes out to get him). And constituents love them some incumbents because it doesn't require effort, and electing a new guy means you lose all the seniority associated with the old bastard.

And now we can all look forward to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Federal Prison.

Louisiana's changed before, it can change again. I assure you if Obama gets shiat done down here after the last 3 or 4 years of Bush stalling, more people are going to look favorably on the democratic party.

Besides, we vote how we want, and single issue bullshiat dosent go very far. After all, even the hicks vote for Landrieu.

I don't think Jefferson got a lot of party support this time around. that probably had a lot to do with his defeat.

Other reasons given for Jefferson's defeat:

His supporters thought that he had already been elected, not understanding that the electoral process was pushed back a month due to Gustav.

I'm serious. That's one of the reasons being given for his defeat. Even with ultra-low turnout, he still won in Orleans Parish.

BTW, I predict a lulzy redistricting process when the 2010 census takes a seat away from Louisiana.

And that state is blood red, so the Reps will probably take it back in '14.

LOL WUT

The only reason a Democrat was not elected is because, per the new primary rules forced onto us by the Federal Courts, we now have to hold separate primaries like everybody else does, and that process produced William Jefferson as its candidate.

It's the rest of the state that are the Republicans. We just happened to elect one this time because he wasn't William Jefferson.

And now we can all look forward to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Federal Prison.

This is one of the greatest things ever said.

Strange how the overwhelmingly popular Obama is now 0 for 3 in elections held after 11/4. It's almost like his lack of action in our time of economic peril is souring people to the Democratic Party.

The Democrats will win this seat back, but lose 40 more, if they don't separate themselves from the cloudy vision of Obama.

Cheers to the Louisiana residents. I am very proud of you for doing something much of the rest of the country didn't do.

Insanity... doing the same thing over and over again and expecting change.

Congress with their 10-16% approval rating and most of these farkers get re-elected. The rest of the country deserves the FAIL tag.

Louisiana deserves the HERO tag.
