I'll admit my reaction was somewhat similar to the author's the first I heard of this, but unlike him I tend to at least google a bit before cementing my opinons, and I see:

(1) She has a law degree, which she got in the normal number of years. That's at least one up on Sarah Palin (I'm sure she's up by many more than that, that's just the only thing I really bothered to look up).

(2) She would have actually lived in New York before taking the seat, so that's one up on Hillary Clinton.

So... better than Palin, better than their last choice for the post. I'd say it wouldn't be a horribly bad idea. I imagine they'll have some sort of election or something, though, appointed successors don't always end well.

Kennedy most definitely was a sterling president in his time. I was quite young at the time, yet clearly remember the adults frequently talked about how Kennedy was good for the country, made us proud to be Americans. Regarding Bobby, I have to give him credit, he kept pushing John on Civil Rights and truth be told he did a good job in his nepotistic position. Aside from that position he really didn't hold an office on which to be judged.
