Talking to the band with his back to the camera, nice. He had to be the most awkward human being to ever have his own show.

Still, we gotta give the dude credit for at least having bands on the show. This was a show I'd watch with my grandparents, and he'd usually have something that'd freak them out once a week, in between the plate spinners and puppets and lounge acts.

hey, wasn't the lead singer of Steppenwolf Canadian and blind?

/ or was it the whole band that was Canadian?

Is it still lip synching when you're obviously singing/playing along with a pre-recording?

Saw them in '69 or '70. Second rock show I went to. "Monster" was their new album at the time.

I'm so sick of the term "Halcyon Days" to describe the 60's. They were NOT times of peace, there was a lot of violence and civil unrest, and Vietnam.

also, that's pretty funny when Kay misses the edit into Magic Carpet Ride

To be fair, even fewer people had heard of the Fugs back then. And they weren't any good, they just broke decency laws.

Mark Kay was actually born in East Germany and his family was able to sneak across what would become the Berlin Wall to get to West Germany. If you ever get a chance, listen to "The Wall" by Steppenwolf. One of the most underrated songs ever, IMO, especially when you know Kay's background. Gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. From there, the Kays later immigrated to Canada.

/and no, he is not blind.

I always thought Steppemwolf took "protest folk" music and made "Rock & Roll" out of it. Many of Kay's lyrics are political. Not your usual top 40 love songs. A very creative and clever songwriter who is underrated IMO. PS, and he's still out there rockin today!

john kay = personal hero. steppenwolf gets overlooked because of Born to be Wild. Get the album Monster and listen to it, really pay attention. Very political, very smartly written, and the music is sweet
