My wife woke me up (very sweetly, mind you) the morning that one was published and told me she wanted me to look into her eyes and know that she was absolutely in love with me, and that past stupidity really doesn't have any impact on our current relationship, before I read the comics that morning (I always read xkcd on mwf mornings). Suffice to say there's some relevant history there :)

What exactly is wrong with love growing out of friendship? I mean, from practical experience I know it doesn't work, given my lifelong failure with women, but I don't see how it could work otherwise. The characteristics I would like in a woman aren't ones which can be discerned from a casual glance across the barroom floor. The women I've been attracted to are those I've known for several months and got to know on a significant level before realizing that I would want to peruse a relationship with them, but of course some jerk has already claimed them. I suppose that's why I'm a 27 year old virgin with no prospects.
