Understatement of the year from George Bush. "Iraq war Bush's presidency costlier and longer than expected"

44 days to go before he goes.

And-1 2008-12-06 03:39:57 PM
Well, to be fair, the same could be said of George Bush.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2008-12-06 03:50:16 PM
If, at any point in the rest of his life, George W. Bush asmits he made a mistake, my head will asplode.

Any mistake, no matter how trivial, as president.

Bush called the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the most vexing problem in the region

I think this might qualify for the runner-up slot for Understatement of the Year. No farking shiat, Bush. The Israeli-Palestinian confict is vexing. Well, how about that....

Don't worry. When we're neck deep in Afghanistan/Pakistan, Iraq will be largely forgotten. Unless it bites us in the ass.

Marvin K Mooney will you please go now?

Not costlier and longer than expected by me. Or Michael Moore, for that matter.

How's that feel, knowing Moore apparently had a better grasp of reality?

The violence was quelled 2 weeks prior to the surge when Sunni tribes entered into a truce, part of which saw them paid for having their militias provide security.

It's a nice little exclamation point on the end of American power and hegemony I guess.

Except for sex with the missus, of course. Well, probably more costlier than he ever imagined, but I can't imagine he's more than a two pump chimpchump.

Phil Moskowitz: It's a nice little exclamation point on the end of American power and hegemony I guess.

The power has never been in the country, but in the individuals. Look at how Thyssen completely bypassed Germany's fate. Or the Agrawals in India before, during, and after the British period. Or the people who fled Eastern Europe. Or Kai-Shek avoiding the communist revolution in China.

I'll play ball. What were good reasons for voting Bush at the time, and which of them panned out?

It is more than one single choice, as he had to make it past GOP primaries first. If you indulge stupid, you will get more stupider

Tax cuts, promises not to nation build, and continued budget cuts. There's three right there.

You know what would have been a lot less costly and shorter? Not starting the freaken war in the first place.

Tax cuts = Did not pay for themselves, therefore you will pay more in the end
Nation Building = Plans to nation build preceded the campaign
Budget cuts = Budget has grown at the fastest rate since WWII run up, faster than even Reagan -- before the bailouts which are the bookend to profiting from a false economy this past decade

So yes, stupid. Unless you consider the Terry Schiavo thing a positive

Tax cuts,

GOtta love "trickle down economics."

promises not to nation build,

Iraq & Afghanistan would like a word with you.

and continued budget cuts.

$700 Trillion bailouts are kinda the opposite of budget cuts, n'est pas? (Oooohhh...French. Yep, I must be a cheese-eating surrender monkey.)

There's three right there.

Next three?

They weren't bad ideas; just executed poorly, if at all. Voting for him in 2000 wasn't a bad thing; though by 2004 it was getting kind of obvious what was going on.

fwiw on tax cuts.
Even Alan Greenspan voiced opposition to them because they were a negative by the time they were enacted

Not concerned at all, actually. But you never know what'll happen in the future.

Ok, I agree there. If you took Bush at his word, proceeding to nation build is a spectacular failure of the plan not to nation build

It is somewhat hard to argue about how one voted given that the overall herd of the population narrowed down the policies on offer. My comments are at the edge of reason, but they are in spirit directed to those who banged the "fark yeah" drum continuously without shame (and 20 or 30% still are for that matter)

There's nothing like a good economic disaster to refocus the mind though. I'm optimistic about the future, and for reasons that have nothing to do with Obama or any other politics
