They're cute, and most of them probably aren't rabid.

It's like a bat, but bigger.

In German bat = Fledermaus, literally "flying mouse."

In Australian bat = "flying fox."

Some South American local names follow the same pattern.

Dude, why would you hunt these beautiful creatures?

I am angry, nay, outraged at your behavior!

Hunting for deer or wild hog is one thing (you can eat them), but a friggin bat?

BTW, it looks like you're taking a crap in that picture.

ZOMG those are adorable! But then again, I have a weak spot for traditionally vilified animals: I find wolf pups and baby snakes unbelievably cute as well, and I think sharks are way cooler than frickin' dolphins. So take it with a grain of salt when I say: the baby bats are way cuter than 99% of the ugly-ass babies which appear on Fark.

Rabies, SARS, Nipha, Hendra, Histoplasma capsulatum, Leptospira, Salmonella. They may be cute but I think they may be unrivaled in the natural world for all the microbial assassins they harbor.

The same can be said for humans.
Minus the cute.

I was in the remote highlands of PNG in a village where I was the first outsider to stay and the kids were afraid of me as they had never seen a white person. Kids are afraid of me back home too, but that's because their parents warn them about me.

When there, you do as they do and as far as eatin' goes, they do eat them and they are considered quite tasty.

Yep, I was going native while there, so maybe I was taking a crap.

Can't let you do that, Star Fox.

Ailurophile 2008-12-06 09:01:32 PM
They're actually rather cute. Bats without leaf-noses are all pretty cute. Bats with leaf-noses must be taken on an individual basis. They have a pretty interesting variety of feeding and roosting strategies too (like the tent bats that 'build' tents from big leaves), which isn't too surprising when you consider there are around 1200 different kinds.

LonghornJ: What the fark is a flying fox? Wouldn't that just be a bat?

It's called a "common name"; for example a red panda is a raccoon and the flying fox posted above is a fish, there are several cyprinid fish called sharks but are bony fish and not sharks, a mountain lion is not a lion, a clouded leopard is not a leopard, a catbird is not a cat with wings, a white peacock can be a butterfly. . . .

It -is- a bat, a certain type of fruit bat (not that that negates your point, but it's not the only answer), although they do tend to be on the larger end of the scale. Saw a picture of one with a fig stuffed in it's rather large (proportionally) mouth somewhere.
