Not one hour ago I drove past that gate so I will be getting an (arm sized) crack from these replies.

(For what it's worth the gate is still standing there as of tonight.)

I blame the East Germans. They controlled it from 1945-1991, and if anyone knows about the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, you can imagine how good at engineering the DDR was.
