Ha, silly colonials, all the more reason become ex-colonials.

See, if you adopt a two party system, you don't have to deal with this floppy headed stupidity. You either vote fore 1 or 2, it's so easy a person with a mental can do it.

And, there is no Governor General.

You don't have to deal with these umpteen brazillion parties (like 3 or 4) making the majority a minority.

This is one of the big problems with a multi-party system.

The party that gets the most votes by a wide margin can lose. There are a lot of people in the world who think there is magical silver bullet answers that "if we just went with system X all problems would go away", but that's naive. Every system has it's problems.

What? I though Americans would enjoy a good rowe of Survivor: North America's Brain, where popularity contests and back stabbing was a way of life :P I thought you guys lived for this kind of self-promoting drama, ate that shiat up :P

Honestly, its a couple of dicks who shouldn't even be running their respective parties any more having one last pissing match where they let politics get in the way of running the country. The GG's cooling time will hopefully expose both of them for just that and by the end of January both core parties will have their heads replaced.

Some of us in multi-party states don't see it as a problem that a party that isn't supported by the majority and can't form coalitions with other parties don't get to rule.

Another good thing is the possibility of minority governments that have to compromise and work with the opposition.

It's a dangerous situation that can only get worse. In addition to the Queen taking over, Canadians will be driving on the wrong side of the road until Jan 26th. British pounds instead of Loonies. Canada as a country without a government will be shrouded in a killer fog and the border will mysterious move back as you approach it. Prince Charles will be prank calling Florida congresswomen from Toronto. Canadian bacon is renamed Ambigious bacon. The area codes have all changed to UK dialing prefixes.

BumpInTheNight 2008-12-06 08:19:03 AM
Its worse then that my friend, this morning when I woke up I looked in the mirror and noticed my teeth were yellowing and starting to bend inward toward each other. I went to start the coffee but noticed a little note on a tin of tea bags saying it was complements of the 'new bigger brother', my coffee was missing. I went to pee but found a CCTV camera aimed right into my toilet, and another had grown up from inside it...inside it!

Reeling from that discovery I just went out onto the back porch for a fag...er cig^h^h^hfag and all I could see were yobs running around in hoodies throwing donuts at one another from cars and getting makin an ass of themselves. Even my Tellie only had four channels and they were all playing Rickie Gervais's best of clips featuring tartish fap-dollies carrying on about dangle frazzbe harthropes!

/help me!

FWIW: this "legitimate" CPC government got 36% of the 61% of eligible voters who manged to hold their noses long enough to vote.
This translates into 21.9% of eligible voters .
None of the Above got 39%.

Here is the best take I've seen so far on the whole ratshidden mess.

It's Rick Mercer of course.

Are you farking serious?

A couple weeks ago, the Wonkette editor guy got some email from someone or some-whatever from AIG and posted it. It sounded like a 12 year old fat girl talking about how she hates people that call her fat. It's like a Fark politics thread except one person gets their horse shiat posted in really big letters. It's basically Defamer with "OMG BUSH" and "WASHINGTON" interspersed throughout.

In all seriousness... the Queen and her representative actually have an important function in our government. They prevent grossly unconstitutional behaviour by the governing party, which is to say they actually look out for regular Canadians. You could never have an illegal siezure of power here, simply because any governmental power is "at Her Majesty's will" which legally means HRH (via the Governor General) will not agree to any illegal rule. If HRH tried to interfere with any legal actions by the government, I imagine the public would demand her removal from our governmental system.

Alas, Harper's latest shenanigans, while weaselly and immoral, seem to be legal, so I guess the GG's hands were pretty much tied.

I just don't think it's funny, especially since most of the rest of their stuff manages comedy while at least attempting to make some sort of salient or witty observation. She mights as well have gotten her cat to type this, it would have been just as funny and enlightening.

Well said. Actually all of the shenaningans conducted by all the parties, and attempted actions, were completely legal and democratic. There was never any "overthrowing of the government", just persuing completely constitutionally legal measures in a parliamentary system. Also:

1) There was/is no constitutional crisis. Political yes, constitutional no.

2) The Governor-General (recommended by the PM) is not appointed by, or the representative of, the Queen of England. She is the representative of the Queen of Canada. Yes, they are the same person but legally they are two very different roles.

I know they were going for "funny" with that post but it was so inane and off that it was borderline insulting.

Our expectations when it comes to American understanding of our system are set low. I'm just surprised they didn't refer to the leader of the government as "Canada's president."

It's the reason the US invades other countries and tries to force US style democracy, US style football, US style food and US style corruption, so all will be comprehensible to US citizens. Appreciating anything about foreign countries hasn't been on the calendar.
