For a presidency to have been a success does the US not need to be in a better situation than before the administration came to power?

FTA: it is simply mean-spirited of them to deny him his due.

George W Bush deserves nothing more than a swift kick in the ass on his way out the door.

NightOwl2255 2008-12-05 11:19:19 AM
DamnYankees: Can someone list me a three substantive things that Bush actually did well?

1: Greatly increase the power of the executive branch.

2: Increase the size of Gov't.

3: Unite the world in its hatred of the US.

You didn't say good things.

DamnYankees: Can someone list me a three substantive things that Bush actually did well?

1) Look like a fool.
2) Went on vacation.
3) Mangle the English language.

He did those spectacularly.

MacG: You extreme leftists might secretly thing he was great because of how much he helped expand the size of government, but that is the primary reason I think he failed.

Oh yeah, that's why we secretly like him. Because he expanded government. We aren't worried about what the government does, or how effective it is, or whether or not is it run by people with an absurd religious agenda, or if it leads us into wars we should not have fought, or if our leaders are lying to us, or if they are corrupt...we just care how josh darn big it gets 'cause then our side wins!

This is why you people loose. You have zero ability to understand the motivations of those who think differently then you.

I can be gracious to President Nixon because he did open the door to Red China, even after Vietnam & Watergate.

I can't think of anything Bush II did over eight years that merits any positive.

/Maybe declaring the Hawaiian Island chain a natural preserve counts.
//That's just about it though.

Here's a scary thought: By creating the EPA, Nixon would have proven himself to be too liberal to be a Republican for a large part of the Republican voting population.

One of the greatest and most underrated accomplishments of George W. Bush is his brave and selfless act of showing the world that Sedgways are hazardous.

History may judge him less harshly than we do right now, but the incompetence alone makes him a below-average President.

GodIsDead 2008-12-05 12:32:27 PM
Bush has done more for Africa and AIDS there more so than any previous President. That is very true and admirable.

That also absolves nothing regarding his total record. At best, it will reflect a positive footnote to his dubious record as President. If, as I would wager, Obama double-downs on this noble effort W's focus on this will be likely lost to history.

So yes, he did better in Africa than one would expect. It's also unfortunate he screwed up a few other continents at the same time.

absoluteparanoia 2008-12-05 12:46:32 PM
I've heard that he feels really bad about his presidency. And that he just wants it to be over. On the one hand, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and seems really sorry that he farked everything over.

That doesn't mean I will ever respect him.

He's like the kid no one likes in school. (new window)

thamike: Charlie Manson wrote a couple of good songs.

Jimmy Carter got peace in the Middle East...for a year or so.
Abe Lincoln was great except for all those dead Americans he left in his wake.
Jefferson started our first war on foreign soil...against them Arabs.
JFK gave us the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Bill Clinton traumatized all parents who had to explain to 10 year olds why he was being impeached over a cigar.

Overall, a few years of perspective are needed to say too much that is definitive.
