Ah, the old "hijack an aged scholar whom I know nothing more about than what I've read on Wikipedia and use his name to invest my tired and unoriginal thoughts with an artificial gravitas and sense of purpose" technique. An old staple of the few tired horses left in NRO's increasingly decrepit stable.

Oh, and just to continue to trend, fark Cog.

I rarely have bad things to say towards you, Ninja, but Hanson does know what he's talking about when it comes to ancient history. He's fairly well-versed in antiquity military history. I keep Western Way of War and Carnage and Culture on my shelf because they're excellent studies.

Hanson is something of a partisan hack when it comes to applying historical lessons to modern events. The best historians will tell you that attempting to draw direct analogies from history to current events is a academically suspect practice, but one which people like Hanson and Barbara Tuchman make money off of.

I don't disagree that he writes columns full of WHAARGARBL, but as long as he sticks to events prior to the 6th century, he's one of the best military historians out there.

Uh oh, the "conservatives" have figured out that the only reason they just lost their asses in the election was that they hadn't dedicated enough energy to constant "analysis" of how the libs are wrong about everything. With this new strategy in place they'll be unstoppable !!

colbert_rules 2008-12-05 09:45:19 AM
talk about hypocrasy. Did they forget who passed the bills under Clinton? Or who did not care that it was wrong and overturn it when Enron collapsed?

Part of the reasons why I feel that libertarians were kicked out of the GOP is because the current conservative faction(yes there is more than 1 faction) never is wrong even when there is overwhelming evidence that they are wrong.

now if the conservatives that I no longer respect had indeed done something after enron -- then and only then could they claim to not have been culpable. Both parties caused this. Both wings caused this.

I think the social conservative stance is: if you don't allow us to lie through our teeth then you hold us to a double standard. And the reality is they lied and were held to account. How any one that is religious can claim to not bear false witness and do this is beyond me.

Should we turn every NRO WHAARGARRBL thread into a poop thread from here on out?

the media has a double standard where they let liberals get away with things they call out conservatives on because the ends (abortions for some, miniature american flags for others) justify the means.

Not really, clarity of thought and organization of ideas is educated literacy. Fapping to your own vocabulary and library of historical references has nothing to do with it.

I can't stand that "old man" conservative prose. Good writing is about getting to the point not pulling a sentence apart and replacing it's components with the worst results from a 1920's thesaurus.
There's always some idiot on Fark trying to imply great stature with this faux colonial (whiter than white) diction and a patronising tone. It's like they are desperately trying to sound academic to cover up for their set of anti-intellectual beliefs.

"To expect the average Fark dweller to understand my musing on reducing economic regulations would be complete folly so I will save my opinion for a more enlightened forum. Ta ra Obamatronizards!"
