Mr Satriani has too much money to spend. These sort of legal actions very rarely succeed.

/ In other news, I have patented the A above middle C. So if you'd like to use it, please contact PoopyLicencing Inc.

You're probably right about the suit not succeeding. Still, this is pretty interesting:

YouTube compare & contrast of the songs. Satriani's instrumental fits "Viva" like a glove. (new window)

DslainteC [TotalFark] 2008-12-05 08:06:33 AM
Meh. Four bars (repeated) from the verse have similar melody lines. Not much of a case. Plus, a songwriting credit does not involve the chord progressions of the song, just the melody line.

It is a very noticable rip off, which makes the fact that the song suck that much more surprising. Satriani is what needs to be on the radio, not Coldplay.

a) There are only a finite number of musical possibilities in pop music. Sooner or later, you're bound to use something that's already been used somewhere else.

b) There are much, MUCH worse things in popular music than Coldplay. Celine Dion, Pussycat Dolls, and most of the rap genre, for instance.

Nemo's Brother 2008-12-05 09:39:39 AM
U2 should sue those untalented douches as well. The only reason they are popular is because they get pushed through the roof with marketing, payola and Gwyneth Paltrow.

zvoidx 2008-12-05 10:00:08 AM
Melody, phrasing and even the tempo is very close!

Coldplay doesn't have to intentionally steal it for it be a case. They could have heard it and then subconsiously wrote their song based on what they heard.

Joe Satriani will win. No doubt.

Wow, that song sounds a whole lot better with Satriani's guitar! I doubt Chris Martin did this on purpose though. Far, far too much to lose. But, fair is fair and if money is owed it should be paid.

I must object. The Pussycat Dolls are extrememly talented. although I hadn't been aware that there was music accompanying their videos.

Ahhhh... one among the great pantheon of Fark Legends of Guitar has decided to contribute to the thread. Did you even listen to "If I Could Fly?" Not a mechanical representation of music whatsoever.

DslainteC: Meh. Four bars (repeated) from the verse have similar melody lines. Not much of a case. Plus, a songwriting credit does not involve the chord progressions of the song, just the melody line.

Songwriting credit... dead on. Music credit, however ("words and music by...") covers the notes. The signature melody in "Viva La Vida" is a dead-on facsimile of "If I Could Fly."

I do like Coldplay and Satriani, so I guess that makes me not only gay, but hot for really hairy, bald, middle-aged Italians. Ew.

Naw, they are too busy planning to sue the next experimental band with a shred of originality.

rekoil [TotalFark] 2008-12-05 11:21:24 AM
The odd part is that they obviously don't mind giving credit where due - they've done it before openly - they gave Kraftwerk songwriting credits for "Talk" - so this could be one of those "unconscious" acts of plagiarism a la "He's So Fine vs. "My Sweet Lord". It's not a stretch, I've done it before myself - thankfully someone else noticed it before I actually started playing the song in public.

Not saying he's a bad guitarist, quite the opposite. He's a genius when it comes to complexity. However, I feel like his playing insists upon itself, to pull an idea from another fark thread. I've never been able to get into Joe, or Vai, or any of that dream theatre prog rock stuff.

This certainly has a lot more weight to it than the Creaky Boards claim.

A way for Coldplay to "win" this case would be to find other songs that include this melody or one close to it, preferably in a song that was written before Satriani's. Even if you were too find other songs that rip off Satriani, he would need to go after everyone else as well, you can't selectively go after one artist.

Suing Coldplay is profitable, but going after bands like Creaky Boards...not so much.

Meant "band" obviously, but "bad" works just as well in this situation.

I dont understand the Coldplay hate. I understand the Chris Martin hate as he is self-absorbed, and egocentric, etc - but what lead singer is not? But I digress...

My point is that music IS SO FARKING BAD right now, why/how/would someone pick apart Coldplay when there are so many other horrible bands around. I mean the farking Jonas brothers are considered a legitimate "rock band" - This is crazy!!

The progression, melody, phrasing and tempo are nearly identical.

I think Coldplay better break out their checkbook.

Coldplay is ok. It's just bland cheese rock for people who don't know any better, which of course is almost everybody, so its wildly successful.

Thus the hate.

so Coldplay should get the pass because they barely clear an already low bar? Coldplay isn't nearly as bad as some make them out to be, especially since I don't recall any of their stuff being shoved down our throats since Yellow. But they are pretty goddamned generic.

I think I'm more annoyed they that get much more attention while those that do the same thing years before them got almost no attention.

The overlay is noise, noise, noise, noise, RUUUUULE THE WOOOORLD, noise, noise, noise...

Three notes in progression is going to happen at some point. There are millions of songs in existence. The likelihood that two of them will have three notes in a row that sound alike is roughly the likelihood that out of a million monkeys at a million typewriters, one will manage to write a three letter word.

what about all those songs with the
G, E-, C, D+ chord progression?

or G, F, C
or C, G, F. [left to right, up going down]

there's gotta be tons out there...

Music is not the same as a word. ABC is always ABC in writing. But ABC in one song can sound very different than ABC in another, and that makes all of the difference. It isn't just notes in progression, it is how those notes are played.

There's a lot of 'Beautiful Day's production in 'Viva La Vida' too.. but then, with Coldplay using Eno and Lanois and producers, no wonder.

just because you cant understand or identify the emotion, does not mean that it isn't there... you are likely just to dumb to understand and feel it. Slow blues guitar is not the only way to create emotional guitar playing.
