Expect more people to drive 95-to-91-to-84-to-90 if they're doing the BOS-NY trip.

Great... Now I'm going to have to sneak across the border from Fall River to Tiverton every time I want to go to Rhode Island... and Tiverton cops suck balls.

NewportBarGuy: Nuke the state from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

That's when they blew up the Jamestown Bridge, right?

There would tolls at the state line on every interstate highway

Massachusetts is considering abolishing tolls on most of the Turnpike but leaving tolls at the Connecticut border (I-84 interchange) and the New York border.

A new element that turned up today would institute a one-half-cent fee for each mile driven. It would be collected based on mileage as recorded by vehicles' odometers.

Interesting. Usually the call is for GPS trackers in every car because that lets the government track every car. Using the odometer is relatively unintrusive and very un-governmentlike.

When people have had enough and start killing stupid politicians who try to tax every little thing to support the bloated government, perhaps the politicians will become smarter about what they really need to do to manage the commonwealth. Shrink and reduce bloated government office? No way! Tax more, more, more!

Many states are going to impose this type of revenue enhancement facility and if the credit markets weren't dead, they would be mortgaging all the highways to private companies for a payment of cash today and calling it a "public private partnership" or "PPP" as it is known. The companies would get the right to charge tolls forever to recover their "investments".

/// Anyone who opposes this is a freeloader, literally.

RodneyToady: Expect more people to drive 95-to-91-to-84-to-90 if they're doing the BOS-NY trip.

Uh, that's how people do it now. No one takes 95 all the way from Boston to New York, it's completely out of the way.

TFA: The plan also includes a 10-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax increase, to 35 cents per gallon, plus a new tax on petroleum products equivalent to another 15 cents per gallon.

And that, kids, is why everyone in the East Bay fills up in MA, which has significantly lower gas tax (though probably not for long). RI already loses retail sales to MA, because the sales tax is cheaper, and this will just ensure that no one fills their tank in RI.

That'll be fair to everyone who lives off of exit 9, like myself. I'm sure the town of Auburn will appreciate the extra 10,000 cars pouring onto Rt. 20 every day, after they take exit 10 to avoid the toll.

Illinois has tons of tolls on I90, as soon as you enter from Wisconsin you pay, you pay 5 more times until you hit Chicago, and then you pay twice to get into Indiana.

And believe me, Chicago generates a lot of money. You people are just being cheap.

and you are encouraging reckless habits by our legislators. federal and state governments have the means to fund roads and infrastructure but divert funds to frivolous endeavors. this is nothing more than highway robbery. not even obama is talking about raising taxes in these economic times and any government that does so has no control over their own spending. its a losing game to tax and spend.

Luckily, Republican welfare queens can always count on blue states to pay for their laziness and government infrastructure. Pay $.30 in taxes, get a dollar back!

That'll teach those democrats to have work ethic, employable skills that comes with education, and competitive industries. Keep on contributing, we're going to keep sucking off your paycheck! Lolz.

Specifically, anti-marijuana drug enforcement, sell off militarized police assets (APCs, armed helicopters, etc), get rid of the state sex offender registry upkeep (as there's so many people who peed in an ally somewhere and got put on the registry for it that it's now useless), and release non-violent 1st-offense drug offenders from prison. In addition, allow the sales of firearms and ammunition again and tax those an extra, say...5%...to go directly to infrastructure repair.

It may not cover it all, but it's a good start. Frankly, just legalizing prostitution, liscening prostitutes, and taxing it would probably cover infrastructure repair for the next 50 years...but I'm sure people - even in a blue state - wouldn't be able to get over themselves to allow it.

My ex-girlfriend was a stripper. Pretty sure she's a call girl too. It's a sad, sad life for those who have to do that to get by. Most people never really recover from it. That's why she's my ex... I don't know if it's really a positive reflection on society to allow it as a way of life. Really, it's guaranteeing poverty and broken homes...Just like your plan to legalize heroin. Unless you think we should fund recovery programs too...

Cue quizzical dog pic...

(Socially met several women who worked as call girls in Amsterdam while I was in Germany - their view was that the legalization and governmental control of the industry prevented a massive percentage of the heartbreak stories we see here. It's no different than the labor stuff - when it's not regulated, you get all sorts of abuses, but when you regulate it, the abuses get a lot less common.)

If it were legal and regulated, it wouldn't be so shady and depraved.

Not really; no brothels. That's like allowing gambling at home only, no casinos. It just means they won't bother busting what people in all states do anyway--which is a step in the right direction (if you ask me), but not likely to help the economy.

At least that's how I see it; maybe someone more familiar with the situation can elaborate.

I thought I had a dim memory that a state couldn't impose fees for use of an interstate highway because federal law prohibited it.

The old law said federal-aid Interstates could not have tolls except at bridges and tunnels. A few years ago the law changes and now states may apply for permission to charge tolls anywhere. Pennsylvania wanted to charge tolls on I-80. This seems to be going nowhere because they want to charge tolls on I-80 and spend the money in Philadelphia. The feds want the tolls to go back into the road.

Toll roads are often signed as Interstate highways but are not federal-aid Interstate highways.

So they'll be refunding all that Federal money they were granted to build the interstates, which was approved with the assumption they'd not have tolls, right?

When the snapperheads in Rhode Island stop voting in one party control, then they can complain.

Until then, they can soak in the fact they have the smallest penis, I mean state, in the union.

We vote one party into power in the legislature, by far the most powerful government entity in our states politics, and then always vote a Republican Gov just so nothing gets done. RIers are just people who are scared to take a chance and actually do something to better their situation. So we just tread water while bleeding in shark infested water. It is really sad. You can smell the fear.

And here I am graduating in 2 weeks. Sigh.

Yup. Sadly I live off 95 and work off 95. New Haven is a bear. I've also been saying CT should put tolls on the damn NY border for a decade now. All that traffic tearing up the roads and it's CT residents getting reamed with the stupid state gas tax.

Is there a way we could partially legalize prostitution, kinda like how we should use pot legalization as a test case for legalizing some/all other drugs?

I agree with Shaggy_C, once you get past the top level totty (i.e. headline dancers, girls that can charge $1,000 for a night, and Las Vegas showgirls), you get into some really sad stories.

Also -- the US is not the Netherlands. Just because it worked for the Dutch is not a guarantee of success for us.

I always wonder where the girls who stick objects in their anus come from, what their stories are.
