Hopefully I got here before somebody posts to fellate yet another terrible band that's never had a hit single or a top 100 album. But probably not.

That band won't be Sonic Youth though. Dirty would like to have a word with you.

Way fail. Also, Lee Ranaldo is most definitely a real musician, and I dare you to tell me that Steve Shelley is not.

I stand corrected there, danduran.

Trolling however, wasn't my intention, as it simply means offering a dissenting opinion to what has already been agreed to as consensus. As it was inadvertantly the Boobies, that pretty much eliminates any possibility of being a Troll.

Davescookies 2008-12-04 05:02:09 PM
Falling into the trap, however, was a total fail.

say what you will about the rest of their discography, I question anyone's taste in music if they dislike Daydream Nation.

So a #83 on the Billboard charts album, with a #4 Modern Rock charts single doesn't count?

Or a #33 on the Billboard charts album, with a #7 Modern Rock charts single?
upload.wikimedia.org

Or a #34 on the Billboard charts album, with a #13 Modern Rock charts single?

Not to mention...

Washing Machine: #58 on Billboard charts
Thousand Leaves: #85
Sonic Nurse: #64
Rather Ripped: #71

Fail. Troll.

/thanks wikipedia!

My wife (then girlfriend) got me that album for Christmas the first year we were going out... I still have it, even though I no longer have a turntable.

I tried to get into Sonic Youth, but it's just out of tune noise and I can't do it. No thank you.

try Daydream Nation then. It has some noisy part, but not as often as their other albums.

Diamond sea is one of my favorite songs ever, its a tad long though(17 min.)

I doubt it will be as cool as JPJ's collaboration with Diamanda Galas.

"Kool Thing" is a great song. But they do tend to get a little experimental and sucky with some of their music.

Hopefully it will reinvigorate the band. They've been coasting since Washing Machine.

I still can't believe Steve Shelley left The Crucifarks.

/huge Sonic Youth fan
//possibly the loudest band I have ever seen live
///huge influence on my approach to the guitar

John Paul Jones is a real un-sung hero of the Zep. Good going Sonic Youth

So to be a "great" band you have to appeal to the masses and have your songs played tons of times on generic pop/rock radio stations? So using your logic Creed is bigger than Jebus? Buckcherry had a hit, are they a "fantastic" band?

Sometimes I hate this site. Trolls suck.

SY's music may not be to your liking, but you can't say they're shiatty musicians. Steve Shelley is a little low-sticking WORKHORSE. I've had the privilege of seeing Daydream Nation through Sonic Nurse live every time they've come through Dallas and Austin, and that stupid headline ciouldn't be farther from the truth.

But then, I fell for it, so I'm just a stupid asshole too.

I agree in that they haven't really progressed since Washing Machine, but they've put out better albums than Washing Machine (Rather Ripped, Murray Street, etc)

While I agree that they've gotten less experimental and even "safer" (something even Thurston attests to), I do quite enjoy some of their more recent work, especially Murray Street.

/Everything from Sister through Washing Machine is pure win.

shirtsbyeric 2008-12-05 12:36:12 PM
I've seen them 15-16 times starting in 1984 at the Rat in Boston with Live Skull and Pussy Galore

/thought Rather Ripped was a great album.

Yeah, cuz having a hit single is a measure of good music. Hit singles are for morans like you.
