kmmontandon: I didn't know Lyndon Johnson sang.

Like an angel. Most famously he sang the "turn around bright eyes" line in Total Eclipse of the Heart, but he was a classically trained vocalist.

They're part of a series of secretly recorded Johnson conversations that have been released over several years.

Who secretly recorded these private phone conversations? The CIA? Ladybird?

I heard he did some great Dead Kennedys covers off the top of his head.

It will never rival Shatner's cover.

I have watched those recordings on CSPAN (yes I know you want to party with me) and there is this constant thump sound in all of them. Slightly distracting. Still fun to hear how nervous people were talking to him

/can you "watch" a recording?

play them backwards, see if he confesses. People have a habit of doing that.

Seriously, just about every scandal a president has done you can find them confessing when you play a speech backwards.

Here, here.

Here's a guy who was a pauper when he became VP in 1961, yet when he left office in '69, he owned several radio stations, and was a millionaire several times over.

Oh, and he's DIRECTLY responsible for 38,000 deaths in Vietnam, and indirectly responsible for the 20,000 deaths that occurred after he left office.

Amazon is accepting preorders of the Deluxe Edition in full 5.1 surround sound with bonus tracks of LBJ argueing with a Texas State Trooper that his Caddy's windshield was ground to his prescription so he didn't need to wear his glasses depsite what it said on the license...oh, and the open beer was just to add some humidity to the car's interior.

Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon all recorded goings-on. Especially good are the tapes of cabinet meetings during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Great history. Got more stuff than a Beatles Anthology.

Funny that... because today, for no reason whatsoever, I had these lyrics going through my head...

L.B.J. took the I.R.T.
down to 4th street U.S.A.
When he got there, what did he see?
The youth of America on L.S.D.

FTFA: Since then, historians, students and others have heard for themselves Johnson's sometimes abrasive personality and his persuasion powers known as "the Johnson treatment."

Oddly enough, I've read Kennedy was pretty good at doling out his own "Johnson Treatment."

Lyndon also liked to suck about a quart of Cutty Sark a day, plus several cans of Pearl beer, then go riding around drunk on his ass at 120 mph in a Lincoln Continental with a 460 c.i. engine and a 4-barrel, which would top out at around 135 mph.

Funny you never read about that in the papers.

Civil Rights Act? Yeah, what a bastard.

And that Carter! Tried to prepare us for a future where oil was scarce and expensive! Boy did he fark up!

LBJ proxied his way to a controlling interest in Bell Helicopter using Ladybird as a front.

They were okay in ordinary flight, but the rotor mast would bump and become unstable at high speed during extreme combat maneuvers.

Then they would fall out of the sky and kill people.

He glommed about $25 million off that deal. Figure half of the guys killed in the 'Nam were on his chit, it works out to $860 per dead man.

Nice return on investment.

Man, I remember LBJ handing out reel to reels from the trunk of his car. Got a couple of his bootlegs.
There was a huge underground scene of tape traders. He was real friendly to tapers.

I want to hear the one where, after one of his staffers was arrested for soliciting in a park rest room, he calls J. Edgar Hoover and grills him about "how you identify one of those guys".
He was clearly loving the opportunity to torment old J.
I only heard it once on a talk radio show and have searched for it ever since.

Ummm... Crack one yourself. America has a history before 1960. Try Warren Harding.

I prefer his Ozzy imitation singing in the shower.

Johnson could have written "War Pigs."
