Still stuck being North Dakota, though.

Why? New York just took trillions of dollars from everyone.

Don't even think about it. We rank 50th out of 51 when counting DC for teachers pay.

That $1.2 billion should be returned to the taxpayers immediately. Otherwise, the politicians will get a little bit more loose with their budget saying "Oh we have the surplus to fall back on if it goes over budget" and next year they will be $1.2 billion in the hole.

He's increasing spending by 19%, cutting taxes, and ending up with a surplus. Um, the math doesn't make sense. Is this guy printing his own money in his basement?

Does anybody have that misleading chart that basically asserts cities receive no benefit from rural infrastructure and farm bills in the forms of lower food prices?

That was George Bush's thinking. Sure could use that Clinton surplus now.

If Bush was fiscally responsible like this governor appears to be, that kind of thinking wouldn't be a problem.

Not in this state. The guy I ran against and lost to voted against raising the sChip percentage to 200%, against increasing per pupil distributions to the schools (even though our property taxes have gone up 50% in the last decade), against freezing student tuition, hell he even voted against putting the the National Guardsmen in the state health plan.

Oil spiked and so did wheat prices. So basically the state was printing money.

And d_lebowski the GOP owns this state.

Meanwhile, North Dakota has a grand total of zero major cities that require heavy capital investments on a consistent basis. Fargo doesn't count. They also get a ton of federal money, mostly because of that huge field of nukes in the north, and Native American outlays.

Meanwhile, every time California tries to raise some sort of tax to pay for essential services, it takes about 238 milliseconds before it gets consumed within a bunch of Orange County and Central Valley WHARRGARBL.

States like Wyoming, Alaska and North Dakota don't exactly face an enormous challenge when balancing the budget - they have low costs, small populations.... I did my post doc work in Wyoming (so I am getting a kick out of these replies), and I can tell you from experience that they pulled in more money from taxing what the oil wells brought in than they spent out on infrastructure, etc..... people are just expected to do things on their own - for example, it snowed nearly every day from November to June (yes, it snowed several times in June) but not a penny was ever put towards plowing a road- the unwritten message: go buy a truck, or shut up.

The problem is you can't use this mentality in a state with a real population....

Actually, the election results (for President, at least) would seem to imply that South Dakota is actually worse, and that ND tended to vote much more Democrat in this past election:

Why not just call it the Newt Gingrich surplus as prior to 1995 the Clinton Adminstration was forcasting budget deficits till 2000?

And the dems have had the state house for about 4 years out of the past 80. All but one of the state wide offices is held by a republican. And the governor's office has been republican about 75% of the time since statehood.

Texas grows a lot of food and livestock and we only get .94 out of every 1.00$,
We are the only damn non welfare red state, go Tejas!

North Dakota is hugely liberal when it comes to Federal payouts and hugely conservative when it comes to social issues.

They know who butters their farm subsidies, but they also don't much care fer the coloreds and them ho-mo-sexshuls.

Still, I'm glad it's where I grew up, even if the politics are bi-polar.

True but Texas also has many major ports, almost all the oil ports, refineries, etc. etc. Countless tech industries, goes on and on.

Bit different for them, but still true about food and livestock.

Yeah, except not really.

First data I found was the 1997 US Agricultural Census:

Entire corn belt agricultural production: $26 billion

Top five states by agricultural production:
California: $19 billion
Iowa: $9 billion
Nebraska: $8.6 billion
Texas: $8.3 billion
Kansas: $6.9 billion

Then down a little further:
Washington State: $3.4 billion
Pennsylvania: $2.8 billion
New York State: $2.5 billion
North Dakota: $2.5 billion

So the whole "red states grow all the food" proposition is not exactly true. Red state total agricultural export is probably significantly higher than blue state total ag export, but please stop pretending there are no farms in the blue states.

OK. How does that address my argument? It's wrong to claim that North Dakota "grows all the food." It's also wrong to claim that "red states grow all the food." Those were really the only points I was making.
