Excellent. Institute the non-confidence vote after the budget is tabled and let's go to a new election.

Ah, but if the Conservatives come up with a decent stimulus package, then the opposition would be foolish to vote down the government. It's all about the economy, don'tcha know.

Most Canadian businesses don't need a stimulus package (yet) and it's pointless throwing money at the auto industry until the Yanks decide whether it's worth saving the Detroit Three.
Maybe Harper should read some self-help books on how to avoid acting like an arrogant douche-bag during his time-out.

Well, here's a summary from Norm Macdonald's brother.

He tries to be funny, but is only about as successful at it as is brother usually is. Ignore that part.

Go Canada! Harper is playing a dirty trick to get out of this when he should have been willing to compromise with the other parties from the start because it was a minority from the start. Now we will waste more time and an election will probably which will be another 300 million dollars wasted.

GWShenlong05 [TotalFark] 2008-12-04 12:43:29 PM
Oh for crying out loud.

You know what? Fark Harper. Fark him right in the farking neck. We now have no government for 2 months. Right at the fiscal year-end, and the beginning of the 2009 calendar year, there is no one at the wheel. No budget, no economic stimulus, no changes at all. Nothing. As far as the Canadian budget goes, we're stuck in the same situation we've had since this past summer, BEFORE the economy cratered.

All to save the turkey-wobbling neck of this a**hole. We just saw our PM put his ambition to have his backside warm the chair in his office, ahead of the entire country's economic well-being. Stephen Harper is a selfish, cowardly mound of human filth and offal.

You know, I really hope that if all of these people that planned on protesting on Saturday were REALLY defenders of democracy and legality and all that airy-fairy stuff, that they'd be planning on protesting what Harper just did.

By the logic of this group, Harper just CANCELED DEMOCRACY.

You get that? He woke up this morning, said "You know what? F*ck the democratic process. We need some time apart", and the GG just allowed it to happen. In the meantime, jobs are being shed like skirts backstage at a Motley Crüe concert, and there is jack squat being done about Canada's energy and infrastructure problem - and more importantly, its employment problem.

Anyone not ashamed by this should be ashamed of themselves.

evilpup: So Canada is a dictatorship now?

My understanding (not 100% sure) is that the GG reports to the Queen. So, Monarchy is probably more accurate.

YixilTesiphon 2008-12-04 12:43:34 PM
I understand the reason for all our (American) arcane procedures, because the way the government works now is very different from the way it was designed to, but I never really knew much about how Canada works; I guess one good thing about this is that now I have a better idea.

I learned a lot in the last thread, so I'll try to educate you on the government of our northern friends:

The Canadian Bacon party is the largest of the parties in power, and therefor select a PM (no primaries). The other parties formed a coalition (the Metric Party, the Curling Party, and the Maple Party) because, while on their own they have less members in parliament, combined they have far more.

Canadian Bacon doesn't like this, so Harper goes to the Google Group (which is appointed by Queen, although I'm not sure which surviving member) to suspend the Parliament until they push a budget through.

Also, Canadian Bacon supporters view the actions of this new coalition as "illegal" somehow, since they are creating a majority that technically wasn't voted into power.

The Google Group sided with Canadian Bacon and agreed to do Prostitution, which apparently means something else entirely up there.

Anyway, if the coalition can get a non-confidence vote to go through, Harper and company lose power. Harper and company don't want to lose power, and the non-confidence vote looks likely, so that is why they are going this route.

I hope this helps.

No Such Agency 2008-12-04 12:43:43 PM
Bob_Laublaw:
Excellent. Institute the non-confidence vote after the budget is tabled and let's go to a new election.

No, let the coalition form a government. Another election at this point would be an idiotic waste of taxpayers' money. Working together, the coalition parties represent the majority of Canadians. There's no decent reason not to let them try to govern together.

Harper saying ..."the public is very frustrated with the situation in Parliament. We're all responsible for that." is the equivalent of that movie character who always says "Mistakes were made, let's not jump to conclusions" when everything goes awry and it's totally their fault.

Incidentally, the Alberta douche nozzle faction being upset at "separatists being in the government" are WHARRGARBL. They're just as anti-federal as the BQ, yet they looooove having power in Ottawa, in the form of their pointy-headed kitten molester Harper. They're just acting in the usual Neo-Con foot-stamping spoiled child mode when things don't go their way.

Oh yes, AWESOME plan. The world is in the midst of the worst financial crisis in two generations and the GG says "Hey guys, let's bring the Canadian government to a grinding halt for the next 3.5 months (2 for the prorogue, 1.5 for the election to follow).

How many businesses will fail in those 3.5 months? How many people will lose their jobs? How many will lose homes? All because Harper is a dick who saw the crisis as a means to try and cut the Opposition's throats collectively instead of acting on his promise during the election to work with everyone for the benefit of Canadians.
