I'm not sure if the Russian Navy is really capable of "massing" anywhere.

um...ok

at least even though there has been a change of power in russia, no change has occured

They used to be the largest navy in the world, in the 80's. I understand a whole lot of neglect went on after that, but I'm sure they still have a crapload of ships.

We have single ships that could sink the Russian "navy".

The Russians have been getting pretty mouthy lately.

I still miss the cold war though. The Russians were much more fun than Islamic fundamentalists.

How dare the Russians send troops halfway around the world close to our border where they don't belong. We (lovers of liberty and defenders of freedom) would NEVER EVER do such a thing. Nor would we convince a country close to their border to put up a missile system pointed right at them. No sirree. Not us.

U.S. and Russia should be allies. They're not democratic and they aren't going to be for a long time, but they could be less corrupt and more stable and less militarily threatening.

Just because it can steam around doesn't mean it's worth a damn. After rotting on the pier for the better part of two decades, the Russian Navy isn't the threat it used to be. Hell, the Royal Navy is more capable than the Russian Navy at this point. The USN could probably sink everything the Russians have with a dozen subs since Russia's sonar operators haven't had proper training in so long.

But that's besides the point. If Russia and the US ever go at it, we might as well bundle up for the long nuclear winter. So if Russia wants to piddle around South America, we might as well wish them good luck. Maybe they'll accidentally catch some drug runners or something.

However, many of them are frozen to the bottom of their respective harbors, and others are too filled with holes to actually leave dock.

Isn't this precisely the kind of thing the Russians would want Americans to think? We have enough problems fighting countries the size of Iraq/Afghanistan. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

They're taking it in turns to poke everyone with a stick and see who flinches. Then the knives come out.

It might be best just to deploy the nukes now.

Now That's What I Call a Taco!: We have enough problems fighting countries the size of Iraq/Afghanistan. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

The US military is great at killing people and breaking their shiat. It is not very good at holding ground for a long period of time.

The USN, coincidentally, does not operate on the ground, and Russia has a lot of breakable shiat.

kmmontandon: I'm not sure if the Russian Navy is really capable of "massing" anywhere.

The bottom of their harbors would be a safe bet. What they couldn't maintain, they tried to sell, what they couldn't sell, they basically abandoned. The Russian navy is still quite large on paper; but much of their navy will never set sail again.

HBK: schiefaw: I propose a Girls of the IDF / Russian military picture pillow fight!
