it's a small, mostly black county in central alabama doing this, which makes this more understandable. and if think the first black man elected to the presidency is "just some guy who won a contest," you are incredibly ignorant.

So what you're saying is that by virtue of him being born black (something outside of his control) he's different?

However, I doubt it.

I am HIGHLY concerned about where we're heading. We're already sliding down a slippery slope. Obama has been revered worldwide since his election, and now his own people are creating holidays before he even takes office. If this doesn't reak of the stench of false idolatry, then I don't know what does. We are now indisputably living in the days of Revelation, and the righteous will stand tall through these difficult times as the billions (yes, the billions of world. not just millions) blindly follow this man down his path of false promises as they revoke God and Jesus Christ for him. One day (I predict it should be not long after he solidifies his power with his reelection, so just over 5 years from now, most likely just before the day which we traditionally mark the birth of Christ) that we will see the final battle between us and them, and only those who have stood with the forces of Good will be saved. Consider yourself warned.

My friend Carter (born in 1976) thinks we should wait to see what kind of job Obama does before bestowing honorifics upon him. Otherwise, we might create regretable reminders of our political naivete.

The Perry County Commission voted 4 to 1 to observe the second Monday in November as "The Barack Obama Day." County offices will close and its roughly 40 workers will get a paid holiday.

I'm sure The Barack Obama is pleased.

They could have called it the Bush Going Away Bash, something we could all get behind. But that would need to be a paid holiday for anyone earning more than $250,000.

JoeJitsu 2008-12-04 10:30:55 AM
The dumbest thing about the holiday as written is that it can only be repealed by a court decision or a vote by both the US House and Senate and a unanimous vote by the Perry County Commission. These people are idiots to write any kind of law with those stipulations since it obviously violates the state constitution. Because of the lack of any meaningful home rule in Alabama the state legislature can pretty much overturn any local ordinance, and many local ordinances have to be approved by statewide vote.

Turner said copies of the resolution, adopted at a Nov. 25 meeting, have been mailed to Obama and his transition team.

What the hell for?

"LOOK WHAT WE DID, DAD MR. PRESIDENT! WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!"

Anyway, I'm torn on the issue. Usually we wait a while before giving people their own holiday. His election is of huge significance historically, but can we hold off on holidays and naming things after him for just a little bit?

Yeah ... no reason for a holiday for the election of the first black president. Not a milestone for this country at all. Nope. While we're spewing some outrage, why do we even teach civil rights history in school anymore? I mean, kids today shouldn't be wasting their time learning about how we used to be racist because we're not anymore right? Otherwise, people might catch on that we're intentionally skewing the purpose of this holiday because we really hate black people? amirite? amirite?

Fark is getting stupider by the day.

Oops, I forgot. People buy the McCain coins because they like and respect him and believe he is an upstanding, patriotic American. People buy the Obama coins because they are fools and sheep and worship him.

Also, state and local governments should never be able to pass laws or resolutions without the approval and oversight of the federal government.
