my concern is that the F doesn't show up on transcripts or GPAs, so these students might be unfairly advantaged over others when it comes to college applications.

I don't understand the snark. If you screw up a class, they give you an opportunity to retake it. Improve, keep the better grade, don't bother trying, get an F.

I think schools are making it too easy overall, but this doesn't seem like a bad idea.

My school district did away with letter grades the year before I started teaching. Now it's 1,2,3,4, and 5. I give "Fs," not "5s."

It's like that same bullshiat a few years ago when we teachers were encouraged to use purple pens instead of red pens for grading purposes, because purple was "less stressful" on kids. Are you frikkin kidding me?

I had a math teacher who did that. His rule was that if he hit the wrong kid, the victim of his bad aim got to fire back at his fat ass.

Since I sat in front of a perpetual fark-up, and teacher's aim sucked, I got three opportunities to take out his smug, fat ass. I nailed that dick every time. I was sort of a class hero.

Typical GRPS bullshiat. They are just trying to put on another show to distract everyone from the insurmountable mountain of FAIL that is the public school system in Grand Rapids. It is nothing more than that.

If a student is putting forth at least a modicum of effort I can't imagine how it is possible to get a failing grade. (A student that is honestly trying and fails was failed by the school.) I see no reason to protect kids that aren't even trying.

The union president said teachers already provide "an enormous amount of support to students" who are struggling with coursework. "We're not out to get anybody," he said, "but we do think that students need to learn some responsibility."

A world of THIS. Every high school teacher I know already attempts to do everything possible to keep kids from failing. They give makeup tests and exams, beg and cajole their students to turn in late work, offer "last redemption" extra credit assignments... and 9 times out of ten, the students that go on to be given an F by their teacher don't even bother to TRY any of it. Then when they get the F they so richly deserve, the administrators step in and overrule the teacher. Most teachers in bad or even average school systems fail far fewer students than deserve it already, in part because they want to help their students, and in part because they know that if their flunk rate creeps too high they are the ones who will be inexplicably held accountable for the missing work ethics, terrible home lives, and inadequate preparation of their students.

What's wrong with the idea?

Basically, their system is:

F - Failed, cannot retake the class.
H - Failed, but get the chance to retake the class and get a better grade. If they don't retake the class, it becomes an F in the long run.

I don't see the problem with letting people retake a class. As long as the standards are as high on the retake as the original, I think people should be able to try again.

Hell, I've retaken classes in college. The first time I took organic chemistry, I just didn't get it. I passed somehow, but I didn't leave the course with any greater understanding than I came in with. Retook it under a different professor, and it was night and day. He explained things in a way that made perfect sense, and I got an A in the class, and when it was over, I really felt like I understood the topic.

In all seriousness, though, the policy actually makes sense - if they don't retake the course, they fail; if they do, they may do better. This is one of those moves that I think actually makes sense.

I had a band teacher who had a bad temper, too. He once got pissed and swung his fist back and cracked the whiteboard (which I didn't even think was possible) and flung his ratty baton and hit me in the shoulder (wasn't aimed at me or anyone for that matter). No apologies, either. But he had a great sense of humor.

So it's now F--?

My grade school band teacher just had a nervous breakdown and left in the middle of class one day. We never saw him again.
