That's right, American Idiot is a masterwork of complex melodies, subtle harmonies, and non-cliche'd titles like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

I'd give subby +1 if I could.

I remember hearing the song when it first hit the radio and wondered "who the hell are these guys?" then I found out it was Greenday and it made me very sad.

4 years and counting since "American Idiot". I have this theory that bands that can't get new material out AT LEAST every 3 years have nothing worthwhile to say.

I'm looking at you, U2.......

They released an album earlier this year under the name Foxboro Hot Tubs. They basically rip off the Kinks for a half hour.

Wikipedia says that one's in the works, and a single has already been released.

In the meantime, he provided some drums for Tom Gabel's new EP. So go check that out.

Here are some chord progressions from Stop Drop and Roll where they do sound a lot like the Kinks. I am not a huge Green Day fan, but anyone who says they use three chords, clearly doesn't know dick about music. That is all.

NorCalLos 2008-12-02 04:34:08 PM
I'm kinda intrigued. Say what you will about Butch Vig, but he has a distinct sound. That can be an insult when said about a producer, but you can't argue that Nevermind and Siamese Dream, as well as the Garbage albums, sound amazing (even if over-produced). I believe that's why Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins both opted for different producers on their follow-ups. I think they wanted to be appreciated more for their songwriting and less for their studio sound.

Regarding the number of chords in Green Day songs, yes there are 5-6 "chords" in that song, but they're all power chords. I don't think a power chord is even a chord technically because it only has two notes in it (unless you count the octave as a third note). So, if a power chord is not technically a chord, that song would have zero chords in it, which is-(counting on fingers)-less than three.

My point: Green Day's music is not rocket science, but I'm curious to see what they sound like with Vig at the helm.

American Idiot is the most overrated album I've ever heard. I read reviews likening it to Tommy, and when I got to hear the album, I was totally puzzled as to how in the world anybody would think Green Day would do something minutely as cool as The Who.

Something's wrong with your quoting there, but I get the point. I was told by a couple friends after American Idiot came out that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I bought it, and I didn't like it. In fact, I thought my friends must be retarded for recommending it. Then something funny happened, I listened to it again a few months later and I actually kinda liked it. One year later and it was in my regular rotation. So, maybe give it another shot, or don't, but I found that it grew on me so you never know.

So this new GD album will be heavily saturated with the kind of overproduced studio tricks and crap that Vig has put on all the Garbage records?

Shirley is awesome and wrote some great songs, but Vig's production "skills" pretty much ruined them all.

Or it could be the basic straightforward stuff he did with Nirvana on Nevermind. Or the slick but just right stuff he did on the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and Gish.

If I remember correctly, Green Day said in interviews that they listened to rock operas like Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar for inspiration because that was the direction they wanted to go with this album. I don't recall any reviewers comparing Green Day to The Who at all.

Why would Gabel need drums on his solo effort? Should just be him and his guitar. I haven't heard it yet but hope its good.

Thanks for the confession, but you might want to find yourself a priest.

In music, a power chord Play (help·info) (also fifth chord) is a note plus the note a fifth above, usually played on electric guitar. Theorists are divided on whether the term chord is appropriate, with some requiring the third of the chord for it to be considered an actual chord.

I'm really jealous. Tom's solo tour kept getting closer and closer to Boston (and closer to my 21st birthday, no less), but then he turned around and headed to Philly and Cleveland. I was considering bus-hopping my way to New York, but that would've meant missing a Physics Lab and probably failing the class. Considering what happened that night, I totally should have failed.

facisto: Why would Gabel need drums on his solo effort? Should just be him and his guitar. I haven't heard it yet but hope its good.

Well only one song on the album has actual drums. But go buy the album (it's seriously great), listen to it, and then see if you agree with what you said. A lot of the songs on the EP work well with a full band. I think the reason Tom opted to put out a solo record in the first place was because a lot of these songs divert from the standard rock songs Against Me has put out.

Green Day has actually gotten much better over the years. Few bands actually progress, and I give credit to them.

Warning and American Idiot are their best albums. American Idiot is flat our brilliant.

It tooks a few spins for me to catch on as well. Jesus of Suburbia is an epic song, and I found myself playing it way too much.
