Now the Trump Marina has the right idea. Have a million dollar competition. Afterall, aren't they trying to get people to come in and GAMBLE? Guys can get drunk and chase women anywhere. Don't even need a santa hat. But Casinos are supposed to be about gambling. Lets bring on the $$$.

No surprise, really. It has less to do with the economy or competition, and more to do with casino policy. Comps and cashback are way down in AC, and machine payouts have been tightened severely. There's almost no decent video poker left in the whole city, and I just don't see people winning much anymore. Gambling just isn't that much fun when you're left feeling ripped off, instead of playing and just losing.

I've only been to AC once but what got me about the place was how "serious" it was compared to Vegas. Most of the casinos are boring to look at, the night view is non-existent no lightshows and all the signs are red, there are few stores or places to eat out. There is just no fun about the place. If they want to attract people there, more effort should be paid to the experience as well as the gambling. The casino I stayed in, the Tropicana was one of the few which made much effort since it had some independent restaurants, bars and a small mall stuck onto it. The others were boring as hell. Improve the experience and people will want to come there and gamble while they're at it.

It's not really like that anymore. They've been moving in that direction in the past 2 years.

The Borgata is pretty much the equivalent of a Vegas resort, and they just added another tower this summer. With two kicking nightclubs, and a weekend crowd composed of insanely hot women from NY and Philly, you can't call the Borgata boring.

The Taj Mahal has tried to make itself into the Borgata, with another tower opened in September, and several new independent restaurants, including the excellent Il Mulino from NY. Bally's and Caesar's have undergone extensive renovations, and Caesar's has built out The Pier, with upscale boutique shopping (Tiffany's and an Apple Store... so my wife and I can both be happy) and lots of independent restaurants, including a Steven Starr place. The Sands is gone, leveled. The Pinnacle is being built at a swift pace, should open next year. Harrah's has practically tripled in size, with a giant indoor pool/party area, about 10 new restaurants, shopping, and a huge Elizabeth Arden Red Door spa.

One thing I noticed after Harrah's put in the Pool and the Spa -- the crowd stopped being a bunch of blue-haired old ladies puffing away at the penny slots, and started being younger, hipper, and hotter. Yeah, the mortuary bait still plays there, but most of the "bus" crowd from Philly goes to the Philly casinos now (which are dives that have no decent food and lots of smoking) and that void has been filled by younger folks.

So, it's definitely moving in the right direction. Sure, the Hilton, the Claridge (now part of Bally's), Showboat, and the Trump Plaza are pretty much still slot joints, but they're coming up in the world somewhat too.
