After working the drive through in college, I remember the idiots that would get all indignant that we would not open the window if they were on a bike or a pedestrian.

Too many incidents of bikers or pedestrians grabbing through the window at the cash and riding/running off

So the morons lost more business while he blocked the drive thru. They should have arrested the manager.

Dwight_Yeast 2008-11-30 07:51:25 PM
Given that he was on a bike at a Popeye's on Thanksgiving, I'm going to assume that he was drunk.

That said, their policy is still bullshiat: when I'm on my bike, I am, under state law, a road vehicle. I have all the rights of a car and I have to obey all the traffic laws.

Not serving someone at a drive-through because they were on a bike is no different than not serving them because they were in an SUV.

Many places with a drive-thru window refuse to serve folks on bikes for "safety" reasons.I've never understood it. Cars approaching the drive thru at 5 MPH shouldn't have any trouble seeing a bike directly in front of them.

darth_shatner 2008-11-30 07:56:52 PM
The employee said her manager had told her not to serve people on bicycles, because of the safety hazard.

What - do motorbikes get some magical shieldy thing to protect them from cars and SUVs? Or is the manager just too chicken (pun intended) to tell Hells Angels to go use the restaurant?

ginger_fretelli 2008-11-30 07:57:18 PM
Wow...I live 5 minutes from there. It's right next to a Skipper's, which I guess is like Long John Silver's, only it's owned by some asians who think popcorn shrimp and egg rolls go together.

Meh... don't go to that joint. But I do frequent the Castle's store behind it, conviently next to Mattress Ranch. Coincidence? I think not.

That paper is owned by Scripps Media, like the local Boulder paper, www.dailycamera.com, and they have the exact same website layout. So halfway through reading the story I thought it happened in Boulder, not that that would surprise me, but had to check the top of the page to make sure I wasn't on the Daily Camera site.

It's for the safety of the workers. With the register next to the window, it's very easy for a person to grab the cash and run or bike off. In a car, it's much more difficult, because the person's car gets in the way.

Newsflash: Jack in the Box is PRIVATE PROPERTY. Your rights as a "vehicle" end at their property line. You are no longer on a public thoroughfare. Even there, you are restricted and do not enjoy the other rights of a "road vehicle". Take your bike on the Interstate one day, asshat, you will find out that you do not "have all the rights as a car".

Jack in the Box, a private company, has made an agreement as part of their property liability insurance, not to allow asshat bicycles in the drive-through. This is so they can still sell a taco for $.99 instead of a buck-fifty. They have come to a business decision that the added marginal profit they could make letting cyclists through the drive-through is not worth the added insurance premium they would pay.

As far as banning SUV's, some of the Jack in the Box stores around here have overhangs and height restrictions, so that I can't drive my conversion van through. Wahh wahh, I am being discriminated!

Get a life.

That's some top quality WHARRGARBL there, buddy.

Okay, if bikes are banned for safety reasons having to do with insurance, then why not motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles?

The reason bikes are not allowed at drive-throughs has been pointed out by several others in this thread, rendering your argument not only invalid but also stupid.

Have a nice day.

meat0918: Like I said above, it's not for the bikers safety entirely, they have had incidents of people leaning inside and grabbing money or their food and running off.

But motorcycles are allowed? Does not compute. I guarantee it has to do with property liability insurance. Some cyclist got smashed between two cars because the driver behind him let up on the brake while searching for change to pay for their burger, and the guy was wheelchaired, and got a few million. Insurance companies shiat pants, send coverage updates to all the fast food chains stating they ain't gonna cover that any more. Fast food chains institute policy.

It is universal, as far as I can tell.

What kind of neighborhood do you live in where they don't have walk up food stands? I can think of four or five within a few blocks of here that I could ride right up and order.

therumblefish 2008-11-30 08:09:59 PM
I so sick of hearing cyclists bring up the "I have all the rights of a vehicle when I'm on the road" bullshiat. It would be totally cool if you actually applied that principal to all the laws of the road, not just the ones that benefit you.

Wait for redlights? Why do that when I can just hop up on the sidewalk and pretend I'm a pedestrian?

Or how about the class "Weave Through Traffic to Get to the Front" Maneuver? And then, in what can only be described as the most selfish behavior ever they end up slowing down everyone that they just wormed their way past.

My apologies to the 2 or 3 cyclists in the world that are actually considerate and reasonable, but all of your friends are morons and are making people hate you.

No...no they don't. It's almost as bad as the Jack-in-the-Box in question, having egg rolls, poppers, and tacos in the same place. If you know how they make all of it, it's quite nasty.

So you admit you're just grasping at straws and making shiat up? Good.

A lot of fast food restaurants have taken to closing their dining areas and operate as drive-through only during certain hours. This saves them money on staffing and also reduces safety issues.

I even know of one McDonald's here in Philly that doesn't have a drive-through, so it keeps its counter open but closes the dining area at 11 o'clock.
