Aeonite: 4th Edition sucks.

it's certainly not impressing me very much, that's for sure. I dunno tho, some of the players at the local gamer hub seem to love the game.

Ok, here's what bothers me most about 4th edition:

1. discontinuning the World of Greyhawk, then looting the product line for ideas in a 'generic' new pseudo-campaign world.

2. the completely illogical new storyline for the Forgotten Realms setting. WTF people? seriously. none of it makes sense.

3. the 'new' products appear to be the same as the 'old' products. they just got a facelift and a heavier price tag. How many times can WoTC reissue a players handbook anyway?

I think my biggest complaint is how little sense the new storylines make. I'm a big fan of story continuity. If a story (or setting) doesn't follow it's own internal rules/logic then I won't bother following the story. There was nothing in the new setting info that was 'organic' to the already previously established storylines already running through out the product lines themselves, or the novels for that matter. In each and every case, in every product line and in every book, all of the sudden and for no reason 'magic' changed and the calendar just automatically rolled forward about a century. The forgotten realms was the worst - the goddess of magic was killed by an abusive ex-boyfriend with a grudge, like she didn't see THAT coming....and then everyone caught the magic flu and died horribly. I mean come ON!? 20 years of stories just dumped on the roadside. 'magic flu'!? why not explosive acne? it would have made about as much sense.

*sigh*

At least the Paizo kids are still doing the 3.5 stuff. plus, their stories make sense, which means a lot to me.

4th ed. seems more dynamic with an emphasis on battle and tactics.
Less roleplaying or for right now not as much flexibility.
More like a online game at the table.

Although I'm sure its going to expand rapidly with the inclusion of new "optional" books.
Its kind of like the did up the basic D&D framework,
then using the extra books to allow more "advanced" play.

Personally, I don't mind doing both 3.5 and 4th ed. campaigns.
A little of this, a little of that...our group plays what strikes us.

And you know WotC wants it to be the hardcover equivalent of you having to "upgrade" to the current version periodically.
It seems to be the new business model for many...software or otherwise.

BTW...on the original topic...I hope they find that lady soon.
Goblins are a nasty lot for the non-adventurer.

Huskadoodle: Hitler goes missing???

No, he's taken up residence in a small boarding house in Minehead, Somerset. He's running on the National Bocialist ticket and plans to annex Poland.

The word "ripoff" suggests that nothing builds on previous achievements. Which is, excepting the inventor of the wheel and fire respectively, impossible.

D&D is a ripoff of Tolkien. Which is a ripoff of the Poetic Edda. Which is a ripoff of centuries old germanic pre-Christianity religious traditions. Which is...oh screw it...

Aeonite: 4th Edition sucks.

Heh, personally I think it's the only fun edition of D&D I've played besides the Cyclopedia edition. I started RPing with 3.0, and if I hadn't found other RPGs quickly I would have given it up.

4.0 is smart to give a range of tactical choices to all level one characters. Before, playing a fighter seemed pretty boring. Now you have your at will power, your once per encounter power, and your once per day power to play with from level one, and getting more all the time. Combat is far better done. Still far from the best RPG out there (I am a big indie RPG fan, Dogs in the Vineyard ftw), but the most focused, fun edition D&D has seen in a while.

Hell, even in 2nd Edition Specialty Priests of Tempus could use edged weapons.
When I was in the Army, there was like 5 - 7 of us that'd gather in one dude's room, we'd pool our money together, get a case or 2 of beer along with the occasional bottle of Bacardi, Jose Cuervo or Wild Turkey and game from mid-afternoonish clear until 2 or 3 in the morning sometimes. Stopping only to make a food or beer run.

*snipped for length*

I hated 4E at first, but I absolutely adore it now. The points you mentioned would probably tick me off as well, except that all campaigns I'm a part of use original settings instead of the the standard settings, so no pre-made lore and no retcons. From a pure combat standpoint, 4E has grown on me, but I can understand why lore junkies would be ticked. (I was a Warcraft lore fangirl for ages, and eventually got ticked off by the retcons upon retcons, especially after WoW came out. Ugh.)

My biggest complaints about 4E:
-give me monks, jerks!
-non-reliable daily powers can be incredibly frustrating
-lack of true multiclassing is pretty lame, though I haven't tried 4E "multiclassing" yet, so I guess I can't complain...yet.

I actively play (or run) campaigns in 2, 3.5 & 4E, and I really enjoy 3.5 and 4 the most. 2nd edition, on the other hand, is completely outdated and cumbersome now, but the DM for that campaign is addicted to THAC0 and refuses to give it up. God knows why.

There's my nerd quota for the day. *post*

To establish proper lineage, though, the Warcraft universe was largely inspired by Warhammer. When Blizzard approached Games Workshop about making a game, Games Workshop said no. So Blizzard did something very similar and made gobs of cash across several titles.

Or if you turn a bag of holding inside-out?

All of the contents of the bag fall out. 3.0 addressed that situation.
