I know and mostly agree, but hey if the headline gets me a greenlight, that's all I was after here.

Oh hush. My wife is black and my best man was (is) Mexican. If you've never heard that saying coming from a Latino, you have lead a sheltered life, probably east of the Mississippi.

The idea that people should be appointed to important jobs as a political favor to a segment of voters is stupid.

Can we PLEASE go back to how the founding father's set it up? 1st loser gets to be vice pres? And can we please get more than one loser? I'm so sick of "Oooh, he's going to pick so and so to pander to this portion of the vote." And then the vice pres spends four years being neutered and doing occasional press appearances.

I was referring to the idea that Latino's somehow voted for Obama in order to see him appoint a Latino. But the accent didnt help.

He'll make it up to them by appointing the first Latino to the Supreme Court.

noneyourbase 2008-11-30 03:36:12 PM
Richardson got Commerce. It was once suggested that Joe Biden would be appointed to State after four years, and then Richardson would become VP. Adding Hillary to the changed things, I suppose.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 03:39:25 PM
With Richardson's track record as governer of New Mexico, I think he's a better fit as Secretary of Commerce.

Well since you werent specific and that was the only thing that could possibly be construed as racist IMO, that is why I responded as I did.

If you RTFA, many Latino leaders expected that they would get more than their usual 2 Cabinet appointments, and expected Richardson would get the top diplomatic post - after all, he was an early Obama backer. So far, they have gotten neither...but I got a greenlight. Which makes me happy on the last day of my 4-day weekend.

I am very wary of "leaders" speaking for people. I think this sort of tokenism and identity politics is the exact opposite of who Obama is, and the "leaders" of these ethnic political groups don't really get that.

Actually, what I should have said was "do you have evidence of dissent from the living founding fathers when the 11th Amendment was passed?"

The Founding Fathers quickly saw that having a President and Vice-President at odds was a recipe for disaster. There's a reason why some of the same people who wrote the Constitution had a hand in amending it so that wouldn't happen.

I too think Richardson should get the SoS position. Infinitely more qualified that Hillary for the position. Yes, I know she talked to foreign leaders during her time as First Lady. But she wasn't talking policy or negotiating treaties. She was making smalltalk, as the spouse of a statesman usually does.

Richardson, on the other hand, has done countless overseas junkets, negotiations, and the like. The man is about as close to an expert on the subject of international relations as you're likely to get on the democratic side.

Oh, and also add the other delicious fact that picking Richardson over Hillary, especially after his "defection" from the Clinton camp in favor of Obama in the primaries, would REALLY stick in the Clinton's craw. That alone would be worth it to me.

It's really ignorant and jingoistic to want someone tapped simply for the fact that they are the same ethnicity or race as you in a cabinet position.

On the other hand, Richardson is qualified.

So they are fifth in line to be President. I can see why this would feed into Washington egos.

I didn't see much of Condi Rice in the news. Not nearly as much as Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney anyway.

RodneyToady [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 04:29:37 PM
I had hoped for Richardson for VP or SoS since the summer. I thought he would be extremely qualified. I'm disappointed it's going to Hillary, and I actually voted for Hillary in the primary.

I think she'll do a good job, but Richardson was the better candidate for SoS.

Hillary/Bill will have a stiff confirmation from the GOP Reps/Senators. If she/he gets through that then she/he'll last 2-3 years, then Richardson will replace her/him...if scandal/drama doesn't sink her/him first.
