If Pennsylvania was serious about drug and alchohol abuse, we would make random drug tests on legislators mandatory. we'd also put breathalyzers on the floor of the House and Senate and force representatives to blow into those things before they could record a vote.

I've been saying this for some time, now. If they have the power to treat us like chattel, make them fess up the piss for a change. After all, they work for you and I.

FTFA: Marseglia said children of parents who administer the drug tests have an excuse - "My parents are going to drug test me" - when presented with an opportunity to take drugs.

Whatever happened to "My dad will kick my ass, find out who gave me drugs, and then come and kick your ass."?

Or just smokin the weed responsibly and not letting it mess up your grades, social life, etc.?

Smiths 2008-11-30 05:18:41 PM
When i saw the "at home drug test kits" at Rite-Aid and Walgreens for the first time when I came back to America, I totally became scared for parent/kid relationships.

Then I continued living in America and saw it didn't matter; parents did jack shiat for their kids and the kids get away with everything because we don't punish or shame anymore.
Every child is special. No one loses; they're the last winner.

Snakeophelia [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 05:20:47 PM
Suppose the test comes up positive? Then what?

Call the cops?
Spank the kid? (Not advisable for fiesty 16-year-olds)
Ground the kid?
Search their room?

This type of thing isn't a substitute for effective parenting. The important part isn't having a test for whether your kid does drugs; it's having the fortitude to talk to your kid and understand what's going on, so you can better know what to do.

And is this test 100% accurate? Doubt it. As a parent, are you willing to punish your kid because you believe this test rather than your own judgment? Or your kid's own words? If so, why?

"This has done more to help people than locking up any drug dealer on the street."

Seriously? I mean seriously? I know that parents have been trying to fawn off the raising of their kids to television and school for decades, but now the cops and legislators are fawning off their jobs to the parents?

This is a huge part of why I need to Seduce an old billionaire, marry him, kill him with sex, and buy my own island with the inheritance.

No one said the drug test should be the most important part, rather merely a small part. If I had kids at the age where drug experimentation was common, I'd most likely want some sort of test to know. As a kid who, like most kids, did a little experimentation- I remember there being a crossroads where some kids went the direction of not doing drugs, or your typical safe every-now-and-then experimentation, and some became hard core users.

I'd want to know where my kid stood so I could address it in the right manner.

Have you ever tried putting down the drug test, sitting down with your kids, and hitting them?

All Apologies 2008-11-30 05:36:30 PM
As long as they are staying away from Meth, Heroine, Cocaine, and other hard drugs, I think they'll probably by okay.

Most people I know tried cannabis, or smoked it regularly with alcohol use at parties and turned out fine.

Unless of course they smoke Cheech and Chong levels of pot, or start drinking like the Hasslehoff, things should be just fine.

In fact, better I know about it, than not.

the ha ha guy 2008-11-30 05:36:50 PM
downstairs: No one said the drug test should be the most important part, rather merely a small part.

So every parent who uses this is going to understand that there are different levels of drug use, the test is only one tool in the entire realm of parenting, and not every test is one hundred percent foolproof?

Good luck with that.

CruJones 2008-11-30 05:37:19 PM
And? So parents may want to test their kids. Solution: don't do drugs or move out. It's not like waiting until you are eighteen and out of the house will kill you.

rosehip 2008-11-30 05:37:20 PM
"The one-step urine tests yield results in five minutes and can detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, PCP, anti-depressants and a slew of other drugs, he said."

Are they at home tests for scientologist parents?

If the kid is abusing anti-depressants to get high, they need their ass kicked for trying to get high off of something that won't do shiat to get a buzz.
Might as well test for catnip too.

Look people if we didn't have drug users (darkies), gays and people of the other party to look down on we might have to evaluate our own actions, and no one wants that.

Waiting for the follow-up story which explains to kids how taking illegal drugs is an easy, affordable way to completely alienate their parents and lose their trust entirely.

Oh wait, I forgot. We only care what the kids think.

thegonz111 2008-11-30 05:59:23 PM
I cannot think of a way to turn your kids onto drugs better than this. If you make kids take these, all you have to do is wait five minutes until their out the door and into their first apt. Then, they will be so curious that they will have tried every damn thing under the sun.

The more thins are forbidden, the more popular they become.

So...the parents spend $5 to have the kid borrow $20 to buy a detox drink, dehydrated urine concentrate, or bribe a friend/sibling for clean urine kept on hand. You're kidding, right? The at-home dipstick tests are a joke and can be easily fooled with methods that were used decades ago.

Thankfully, the war on drugs encourages children to take up good research practices in order to juke the 'rents. We're not really taking away money from education....

Amen, I remember being a teenager and finding really creative and inventive ways to get F-ed up

Lets face it, All those kids in shop class are there to learn really cool new ways to make bongs, and are sadly, probably better off because of it.

I always have liked my dad's approach to drug use when I got to college.

One day, when my step mom was out of the house he sits down and asks, "what did you do during this, your first year at college, and not what classes you took."
when I hesitated;
"don't worry, whatever you say, I did more of when I was in college, i just want to give you advice, not punish you I AM NOT A HYPOCRITE"

"Commissioner Diane Marseglia and Penndel District Judge Daniel Baranoski would like to see the county take over a program the township developed to sell parents inexpensive athome drug test kits."

Assuming drug-testing your kids is a good idea, which is questionable, why does the government need to sell the tests?

I remember hearing about some study, I think it was done during the eighties, where random middle school kids were pulled aside during classes and questioned about their drug habits, with the implication that they were indeed using drugs. Follow-up study a year later found the kids who had been accused of drug use had a higher rate of actual drug use a year later, compared with a control group. Anyone else remember that study? I can't remember the name or any other details.

There also lying about the test results unless they've come out with a new inexpensive way to test for PCP. This isn't a part of standard drug screens because it's an expensive test to run.

Dupa [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 07:20:09 PM
Excellent, my kids are untrustworthy deviants, and I have no idea what they're getting into, since I'm seldom around. This test could be a great substitute for a decent relationship.
