Damn, I was looking forward to a sonic boom-ies?

Farking Zardwarks 2008-11-30 12:44:01 PM
My dad used to be stationed at Edwards AFB. Our house, in Lancaster, was right under the approach path of the landing space shuttle. That thing would come in glowing hot, and the triple sonic booms were teh awesome.

Also saw/heard/felt the SR-71 a lot.

Once they land, the first order of business is to go to Home Depot for some new tools.

I'm looking forward to having to hang my pictures back up on the wall after the shuttle knocks them off again with that double sonic boom.

They will if they're asked for. Aren't they hurting a bit, financially?

Triple? I only ever heard double or heard people talk about the double boom.

But the crosswind at the Florida landing strip was too strong, and thunderstorms were moving in.

And yet everyday thousands of flights take off and land in worse conditions ... when are we retiring this flying rock again?

Nice that they're shooting for a temp runway.

Let us know how well it manages orbital insertion and re-entry with a dead-stick landing.

Good show - I expected at least 15 minutes to pass for the first snarky response to be posted... However - it doesn't excuse the fact that the Shuttle is an antiquated piece of hardware in sorry shape.

Actually it only took 1 minute and 12 seconds.

Larva Lump 2008-11-30 01:47:33 PM
Antiquated? Would all functioning, more advanced, reusable, steerable, runway-capable spacecraft please form a line over there.

I'm setting my alarm for 1515 EST to catch the de-orbit burn.

I heard triple a few times. We were about 50-60 miles away, and when it came over it was still going Mach 3. Interestingly, from what i remember, the first two were very close together, and the third was a bit delayed.

Pansies.....certainly the shuttle can land in the middle of the two tornadoes currently on radar in Brevard County

compared to California, Florida is a hotbed of normal.

And have the option of going missed approach if they screw it up. Considering the expense...I'm good with them opting for conditions as near farking perfect as possible.

If I weren't so stuffed up and miserable, you would owe me a new keyboard. As it is, the hot tea just helped to clear my sinuses a bit, so thanks?

I visited Kennedy Space Center once when the space shuttle landed. It was completely random, we didn't plan it that way, we just happened to be there on that day. It was pretty cool, the shuttle came in pretty quickly and circled around. There were two sonic booms, one was louder than the other. Impressive for sure.

I don't think California is anything close to normal or average in any way, shape, or form, however weirder than Florida? I detect someone who lives in Florida.

bravian: However - it doesn't excuse the fact that the Shuttle is an antiquated piece of hardware in sorry shape.

Soyuz is pretty antiquated, and some would say Russian hardware isn't as advanced as our hardware. Real reliable though.

To be fair though, Soyuz can't haul the equivalent of a studio apartment into orbit.

Then again, a Russian Proton booster can. It cannot, however, bring it back.

Yeah, guess you're right. Dog's pretty worried anyway and needs me to show her everything's normal and roger a-okay. I hate it now that her hearing's going and she alerts at stuff she didn't used to.
