FTF subby, eh.

Having websites like canoe.ca don't help much either.

Is it really that we're boring, or is it just that the weather can be a little unpredictable here and we're outdoorsy folks who like to know how warmly we should dress or whether we should be driving on icy roads, so that we don't farking die?

Canadian TV isn't boring. It just sucks.

That. People who don't understand why we talk about the weather all the time in Canada obviously haven't lived up here.

How boring is Canada? How f*cking cold is Canada? The Weather Network has become a "pop phenomenon"

It's a survival thing. You have to know how cold it is in the morning before you leave the house, so you know which of your gloves, jackets and boots are appropriate.

The other reason why people watch the Weather Channel in Canada is because people are obsessed with the weather in Canada. It's not enough to say, "Yeah" when someone starts a conversation like, "Man, it's cold today, eh?" You have to stay informed. You have to have a conversation like:
"Dude I was watching the weather channel.. it's gonna be like -30 tonight."
"Crazy! I would get a condo in Florida, but then there's a risk of hurricanes, tropical cyclones or whatever, for 10 months of the year."
"You know, it's only -15 in Toronto today, but everyone interviewed on the Weather Channel was whining non-stop."
"Oh my god, send in the army! They're all gonna die!"

This phenomenon is less pronounced in Vancouver:
"Hey, just checked the weather channel. It's been 15 days without sun now and it's going to be 10 degrees tonight."
"Meh."
"But it's -30 in Montreal and -15 in Toronto, and -40 in Iqaluit."
"I am SO glad I moved! People back east are suckers! Hey, did they have the ski forecast on?"

The weather channel also has constant video of insane weather from other countries and updates on global warming, so it is sometimes mildly entertaining.

Canada is the physical definition of the word boring. Look at some of these posts - the poor little things are afraid of the weather. They are a lot like the English, only with better dentistry.

I seem to recall the Weather Channel being a sensation of its own in the US, as well.

My god, there are boring people all over North America!

I keep getting ads for traveling in Malaysia. I can't imagine a group of basement-dwelling Internet addicts as being the prime audience for that.

Peanut_the_Destroyer 2008-11-30 06:37:29 PM
Yeah, I only like the weather network so I can laugh at all the people up north. When it looks crappy outside I just check the forecast in, say, Timmins or Sudbury and I feel much better about the weather I'm dealing with.

/originally from up north.

Could be worse. They could spend all their time on a web site DISCUSSING how boring it must be in Canada.

stoppit 2008-11-30 06:43:16 PM
Ah yes, Canadian winters (Winnipeg). I've often experienced -40F in winter and +100F in summer. Hardly boring. The seasons are wonderful if you like the outdoors. By the way, there are millions of Canadians who live further south than millions of Americans. I wish I could remember the numbers from my high school geography class. Long Point is almost the same latitude as San Francisco.

In our defence, it is a really good channel. I'll switch over to it to see if it's going to snow overnight, and end up watching a mildly entertaining segment about who knows what for 5 or 10 minutes.

Dear lord, look at the headlights on that one! The one right after it had some sweet junk in the trunk as well, if you know what I mean. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Whereabouts?
If you're an outdoorsy guy than there's no more exciting place in NA than BC, if you're into partying than Montreal is unreal and if you're into the European thing Quebec City is the closest thing you'll find on the continent.

Maybe it was in Niagara; it is pretty damn boring here (save for the strip joints in Niagara Falls, if you're in to that kind of thing).

I've been to lots of places in Canada, unfortunately. Yea, the outdoors stuff is fine, but no better than some places in the USA. Fishing sucks in Canada because of all the insects. Winter sports in Canada are no better than in the USA. Nightlife?? What do you do the rest of the 24 hours that make up a day.

WTF? First Yes on Prop 8 and now Scientology??

There are two things at work here...
1. This advertiser just has NO IDEA of its audience and is failing, massively, at delivering ads that might appeal to Farkers.

2. Drew, I guess, doesn't care that people we could, at best, describe as unethical, feature prominently on the site. I mean, to an extent that reflects on Fark, no? You know... generally when I see a site that has a giant "Yes on Prop 8" or "Scientology is awesome!" ad, it might as well be a big flashing sign of "Here be dragons" or "No rational thinking here".

nicksteel ... where did you travel on business and what in hell type of activity turns your crank? I've lived and travelled all over Canada and visited the US many (MANY) times. The ex was from South Carolina and I have relatives in Los Angeles. I just can't imagine anyone saying that Canada is boring. This is an enormous and diverse country, filled with people who are essentially the same as our American friends. I'm thinking your a close minded tool.

Canada is colder and slightly more socialist than the US, as well as having a less dense population. If you norm for those factors, it's pretty much the same as down here.
