I'm not as angry about it being a taxpayer-funded Christian symbol as I am about it being an eyesore.

Jesus loves a flashy display to celebrate his birthday. I'm incorporating a siren that goes off every 3 minutes and fireworks at midnight into my Christmas decorations. Hopefully my neighbors won't mind if I take some of their stuff and sell it to help cover the costs.

Good man. Because didn't Jesus say, "Strut your stuff before the masses, lest you be ignored"?

What's even funnier is that the Cross is actually a display of his death. I don't get it, are Christians really Goth? You wouldn't remember a relative that passed away by putting a picture of his tombstone on your wall. Yet a cross for Jesus is fine. Kinda an awkward symbol (and I believe symbols are graven images to begin with).

From TFA:

And, said Zabbia, "The law is the law. It doesn't make sense to fight something you're not going to win."

So, Jesus says it is OK to break the law until you can't get away with it?

Ben Franklin:

About March 1, 1790, [Franklin] wrote the following in a letter to Ezra Stiles, president of Yale, who had asked him his views on religion...:
As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion, as he left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see; but I apprehend it has received various corrupt changes, and I have, with most of the present Dissenters in England, some Doubts as to his divinity; tho' it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and I think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an Opportunity of knowing the Truth with less Trouble...." (Carl Van Doren. Benjamin Franklin. New York: The Viking Press, 1938, p. 777.)

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.
-Thomas Jefferson to Alexander von Humboldt, Dec. 6, 1813.

If you are really intersted in "getting it", let me try...

Not a symbol of his death so much as a symbol of his triumph. (I suppose it would be technically more accurate to use an empty tomb, but that's kind of hard to fit on a chain/t-shirt/bumpersticker/etc.)

Consider this (not trying to get into an argument about whose right or wrong here, just helping you understand) the position is that all of humanity is condemned, and that at one moment in time one sacrifice is made that pays the penalty for all of it, followed 3 days later by the ultimate conquest of death and the grave. The cross is a pretty simple symbol of all of that. And...graven image? Not hardly in the context of the ten commandments (well, I suppose there could be people who literally worship the cross)...but that's generally not the point of it. It's point is to serve a simple reminder of what happened 2000 years ago. In much the same way that the altars that Abraham built across the desert were ment to function...not as items to worship, but items to make you remember. Ala all of the farkin memorial in D.C.

According to the Founding Fathers, in a document signed by George Washington, the United States is "...in no way a Christian nation".

So I guess you can disagree with the founders, but you will have to stop claiming they support your argument. Unless you don't care about being demonstrably wrong.

Bob55: I thought Hitler was a believer in the Occult? At least that's what the History Channel always plays. That's not secular.

"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow my self to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows . For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people."

I'm not a fan of the government glorifying an tortuous execution method.

I don't ever get that. It's as if the entire christiandom ignores the story regarding the garden of Gethsemane.

It's one thing to be executed, it's another to CHOOSE to atone.

To each their own, to ignore logic and obfusticate stories to serve their purpose.

FACT: This country was founded on religion.
Not a specific one. Additionally, the country specified separation of church and state. Even the founding fathers agreed.

FACT: The founding fathers were Christians.
Some not so good. Look up Jefferson. Additionally, Benjamin Franklin had an annoying tendacy to cheat.

FACT: Secularism has only been invented in the sixties.
Nope. Always been around. Just not safe enough to declare so. It's not just christians thrown to the lions. Even today, it's sometimes not safe.

FACT: Hitler was a secularist.
He was raised as catholic and don't godwin. One of his famous quotes was:
""Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.""
