As a child of the 90s I grew up with all the great Disney films of that era and I got more out of them than I did with the Bible or Church.

I'll take neither, thanks.

Please, they have a strict dogma they adhere to in order to make sense of the world. They are surely LAWFUL. Good, neutral or evil, I leave to the individual.

"He says there are "eight thoughts" which need to be controlled to help people to discover happiness. Six of them (anger, pride, gluttony, lust, greed, and spiritual apathy or sloth) are found among the list of deadly sins. To this he adds sadness and vanity."

Soooo.... Sadness must be controlled to help people discover happiness?
Who'da thunk it?

shiat, I'll NEVER forgive Disney for those $5 hamburgers that the vendors sold in Disney WOrld when I was ~11 years old. It was a regular f*cking hamburger with a weird yellow bun-why was it $5 bucks?! I don't know about all of the farkers here, but when you step foot in Disney World you can clearly feel the evil enveloping you. It's not just the outrageous price gouging, long lines for rides, or the sweltering heat that makes Disney evil... I really can't put it in words to truly describe the horror that felt even in retrospect.

Canadian Canuck: As a child of the 90s I grew up with all the great Disney films of that era and I got more out of them than I did with the Bible or Church.

Let's see.

Little Mermaid - Giving up everything for a vague chance at nookie is a good thing. And love conquers all.

Beauty and the Beast - Look past the talking candlestick to get a chance for nookie. And love conquers all.

Aladdin - Lying using magical powers works to get nookie. And love conquers all.

Lion King - Kill your uncle who killed your father to get power and nookie, even if he's a schmuck. And furry love conquers all.

Pocahantas - Rampaging english settlers stop if there's nookie. And love conquers all.

Hunchback of Notre Dame - .... just love conquering all. And the French are schumcks.

Hercules - The Gods must want nookie too. And love conquers... well something.

Mulan - Foot binding does not preclude nookie. And love conquers all.

Tarzan - More English Imperialism. And love conquers all.

Oh, there's just a wee bit of irony in a Catholic Church official accusing another organization of corrupting children. Greed and materialism?: The Catholic Church is one of the largest landowners in the world and one of the richest non-governmental organizations.

Oh, and let's not forget about all the children raped by priests in Canada and the U.S. with the full knowledge of the church, the same church that hid these child abusers from the law for decades. I have a fried from Thunder Bay whose brothers were abused by a priest. The church threatened to excommunicate the family if they came forward. Another priest actually told them that "the survival of the church was more important than what was done to your children". No one part of this organization has any moral authority to lecture anyone on their behaviour.

Do what's right, avoid what's wrong, and keep your mind pure.

I can do this for zero dollars a day. It also allows me to face difficult things and still be a good person.

However if your religious values can't stand before something as straightforward as a Disney movie I have to question their worth.

Religion should build character and the last time I looked good character didn't include hiding from every little thing that gives offense. All this does is raise naive children that will grow into naive adults.

Beatle_Matt [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 10:37:37 AM

He says there are "eight thoughts" which need to be controlled

Really? THought control!?!?

I'll shorten the article.
We have failed, and Disney prevailed, therefore they must be evil because they are better at marketing.
Also, we want to control your thoughts and we will tell you how to be happy.
We will tell you what feel good.
That feels good, doesn't it?
TELL ME IT FEELS GOOD!
SAY IT! NOW!

Seems like a perfectly normal thing to say if you are a homeopathic sicko. But that is what they are saying.

It's like giving ted bundy a free pass because he wears a dress, letting thees sick molesters ramble on about how they know what is good for you?

YOU LIKE THAT
SAY IT

M-G 2008-11-30 10:51:36 AM
Since 101 Dalmatians is currently showing, I'm getting a kick, etc...

He does have a point about the huge marketing machine that is Disney, but that comes down to a parenting issue. But the fact that it's coming from the Church kills me.

I got this book some guy wrote, and I'm gonna read it to you, and if you don't believe every single thing in it as absolute truth no matter how much it might not make sense, or what plot holes those evil monsters who use their brains might find, you're going to spend eternity burning in a pit. What? Oh, don't worry about how many revisions the book's had, or how many times it's been re-re-re-translated, all the other versions were just wrong before now. This one's the real deal. Till the next version.

while i am not defending the evil empire that is disney....

FTA: While he acknowledges that Disney stories carry messages showing good triumphing over evil, he argues this is part of a ploy to persuade people that they should buy Disney products in order to be "a good and happy family". However, in Fr Jamison's new book, Finding Happiness, he suggests that many of the answers can be found by people living more simply.

The book, published this week, urges people to reject the superficial temptations offered by contemporary culture.

Fr Jamison has risen to be one of Britain's most well-known Catholic clerics following the screening of The Monastery, which was filmed at Worth Abbey where he is abbot.

The "morality" taught by Disney is disgusting.

Ugly people are overwhelmingly evil.
Beautiful people are overwhelmingly good.
The underdog in any situation has the moral high ground.

etc., etc., etc.

Perhaps the planet's wealthiest land owners should worry less about greed and corruption and start promoting their prolife doctrine by decrying all wars, executions, violence, pedophilia, poverty, pollution, inadequate healthcare, starvation and mistreatment of vulnerable persons.

Yes, I know they declared pollution a sin. Step in the right direction but an absolute baby step.

These people wield a lot of influence and they use it to slam films instead of the real problems?

Jesus H. Christ.

Yes, that's just Disney movies (with a number of exceptions...Gaston and The Beast, Quasimodo, and many more Disney villains that weren't really ugly, just very sinister). That's certainly not most movies out there, especially with the underdog being the good guy. That's damn near any hero movie out there.

This is a noble intention, but an utterly fruitless one. I speak from experience.

They'd rather come to the aid of abortion-clinic bombers than defend innocent people. It's all agenda these days. The Catholic Church has gone completely sour in all respects.
