was it nothing at all? (^)

...no more hope of holding your body in the moonlight...
did I fall in love... for nothing

Whut? No Led Zeppelin?

This one always brings a tear to my eye.

I have been in you, baby
And you
Have been in me
And we
Have been so intimately
Entwined
And it sure was fine

I have been in you, baby
And you
Have been in me
And so you see
We have been so together
I thought that we would never
Return from forever
Return from forever
Return from forever...

You
Have been in me
And understandably
I have been in 'n' outa you
In everywhere
You want me to
Yes, you know it's true

And while
I was inside
I mighta been
Undignified
And that is maybe
Why you cried
I don't know
Maybe so,
But what's the difference now?

I have been in you, baby
You have been in me
Aw' little girl, there ain't no time
To wash yer stinky hand
Go 'head 'n' roll over
I'm goin' in you again
In you again
In you again
In you again...

I'm goin' in you again-ahhh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh
In you again, ah!

I'm going in you again, baby
'N' can go in me too,
That's true
I'm goin' in you again, baby
'N' later when we get through
I'm goin' in you again - ahh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh
In you again, ah!
In you again - ahhh

I see,

It's the top 20 heartbreaking songs for a certain section of people, a section advertised as being all encompassing.

It works because I actually care about Sinead O'Connor

No Leonard Cohen? You need a good 3 hours of counseling for every time you've listened to Famous Blue Raincoat or Joan of Arc.

10000 Maniacs - Jezebel
Rilo Kiley - Rest of My Life
Natalie Merchant - My Skin

What a load of horseshiat, where is Judas Priest - Burn in Hell? As usual, lists involving music fail to take into account everyone other than the writer.

What did you think
I would do at this moment
When you're standing before me
With tears in your eyes
Trying to tell me
that you have found you another
and you just don't love me no more

What did you think
I would say at this moment
When I'm faced with the knowledge
That you just don't love me
Did you think I would curse you
Or say things to hurt you
'cause you just don't love me no more

Did you think
I could hate you
Or raise my hands to you
Now come on you know me too well
How could I hurt you
when darling I love you
and you know
I'd never, never hurt you-oo-wo-oo...

What do you think
I would give at this moment
If you'd stay
I'd subtract twenty years from my life
I'd fall down on my knees
and kiss the ground that you walk on
If I could just hold you again

I'd fall down on my knees
I'd kiss the ground that you walk on baby
If I could just hold you

If I, could just hold you

If I, if I could just hold-hold you, again

Alison Krauss: Jacob's Dream.

In the spring of 1856 with the snow still on the ground
Two little boys were lost in the mountains above the town
The father went out hunting the boys had stayed behind
While mother tended to her chores they wandered from her side...

It does NOT go to a happy place from there.

I just assumed that list would be George Jones' catalog.

As for my spur-of-the-moment recommendation for the jilted: "I Want You" by Elvis Costello

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 07:17:55 AM
Also, came looking for Otis on the list and was not disappointed.

List is just a little weak:

Harry Chapin - The Shortest Story (song describes a child being born in a famine...and living only a few days)

Dresden Dolls - Delilah (just painful to listen to a woman trying to talk another woman out of going back to her self-destructive relationship)

Crash Test Dummies - Superman Song (say what you want about them, but the song they wrote after Superman died in the comics is friggin heart-wrenching)

Flab [TotalFark] 2008-11-30 07:57:51 AM
The Cure - Apart
Sisters of Mercy - Some kind of stranger

(No, I wasn't a goth in the 80s, I swear.)

Tom Waits, Kentucky Avenue

I can't get all the way through, ever.

Eddie graces buick got 4 bullet holes in the side
Charlie delisle sittin at the top of an avocado tree
Mrs stormll stab you with a steak knife if you step on her
Lawn
I got a half pack of lucky strikes man come along with me
Lets fill our pockets with macadamia nuts
Then go over to bobby goodmansons
And jump off the roof

Hilda plays strip poker
And her mamas across the street
Joey navinski says she put her tongue in his mouth
Dicky faulkners got a switchblade
And some gooseneck risers
That eucalyptus is a hunchback
Theres a wind up from the south
Let me tie you up with kite string
And i'll show you the scabs on my knee
Watch out for the broken glass, put your shoes and socks
On and come along with me

Lets follow that fire track
I think your house is burnin down
The go down to the hobo jungle and kill some rattle
Snakes with a trowel
We'll break all the windowa in the old anderson place
And steal a bunch of boysenberrys
And smear em on our face
I'll get a dollar from my mamas purse
And buy that scull and crossbones ring
And you can wear it around your neck on an old piece of
String

Then we'll spit on ronnie arnold
And flip him the bird
And slash the tires on the school bus
Now don't say a word
I'll take a rusty nail and scratch your initials on my arm
And i'll show you how to sneak up on the roof of the
Drugstore

Take the spongs from your wheelchair
And a magpies wings
And tie em to your shoulders and your feet
I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad
And cut the braces off your legs
And we'll bury them tonight in the cornfield

Put a church keey in your pocket
We'll hop that freight train in the hall
And we'll slide down the drain all the way
To new orleans in the fall

Hardly any of her songs do. I have her DVD and she talks about how a song that was so sad (Ghost in this house (^):Shenandoah cover)that she just had to record it. As does one of her latest "Whiskey Lullaby" (^)

In country music you have a lot of tearjerking songs.

1. He stopped loving her today (^)
2. Chiseled in stone (^)
3. Where you been? (^)
4: Teddy Bear (^)
5: what if she's an angel? (^)

just some of my favs.

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin
Alone again, Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan

wouldn't call them "love songs", (that'd be creepy) but those two kill me each and every time.

Tom Waits - Ruby's Arms

I will leave behind all of my clothes,
I wore when i was with you,
all I need's my railroad boots
and my leather jacket
as i say goodbye to Ruby's arms
although my heart is breaking,
i will steal away out through your
blinds, for soon you will be waking.

The morning light has washed your face
and everything is turning blue now,
hold on to your pillow case
there's nothing i can do now,
as i say goodbye to Ruby's arms,
you'll find another soldier,
and i swear to god by christmastime,
there'll be someone else to hold you.

The only thing i'm taking is
the scarf off of your clothesline,
i'll hurry past your chest of drawers
and your broken wind chimes,
as i say goodbye
i'll say goodbye,
say goodbye to Ruby's arms.

I will feel my way down the darkened hall,
and out into the morning,
the hobos at the freightyards
have kept their fires burning,
so jesus christ this goddamn rain,
will someone put me on a train,
i'll never kiss your lips again
or break your heart,
as i say goodbye
i'll say goodbye,
say goodbye to Ruby's arms.

For just straight up sad, without love in the mix, "Kilkelly" by Moloney, O'Connell and Keane.

Flab: The Cure - Apart

Right on!

Lame list overall, but I agree "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is one of the all-time most heartbreaking songs.

I would also add:

Jane Siberry - The Taxi Ride
They Might Be Giants - Narrow Your Eyes
Gary Numan - Little In Vitro

Jane Siberry, "It Can't Rain All The Time" from The Crow soundtrack. Can't listen to it without crying.

Lyric Goodness:

We walk the narrow path
Beneath the smoking skies
Sometimes you can barely tell the difference
Between the darkness and light
Do we have faith
in what we believe?
The truest test is when we can not
We can not see
I hear pounding feet
In the streets bellow
And the women cried
And the children moaned
There's something wrong
It's hard to believe that love will prevail
Oh-
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall forever
Oh-
When I'm lonely
I lay awake at night
And I wish you were here
I miss you
Can you tell me-
Is there something more to believe in
Or is this all there is?
And the pounding feet
In the streets bellow
And a window breaks
And a women falls
There's something wrong
It's hard to believe that love will prevail
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
forever
Last night I had a dream
You can into my room
You took me
Into your arms
Whispering and kissing me
And telling me to still believe
The very emptiness
Of the burning seas
Against which we see our darkest decides
Until I felt
Safe
And warm
I fell asleep in your arms
When I the world
I cried again
For you were gone
Can you hear me?
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall forever
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever
And though the night seems long
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
Your tears won't fall
Forever

I hope I see you on your way down
I hope you break every bone
I hope it kills you on your way down
And I hope you die alone
All of your hate and all of your lies
Will it be worth it
When all of your friends refuse to be alibis
Will it be worth it

shubai33: No Tomorrow, Wendy?

Concrete Blonde is tops in my book, but what is with all that war imagery in that video?

I choose "Gone For Good" by Morphine as a really depressing song. Years ago I was in a car tripping on acid with some friends and this song played on the stereo, turned us into a bunch of weepy tripping biatches:

"I'm never going back
Never going back to you
I'm never going to see you again
I'm never going to dig out your picture
I'm never going to look you up someday
Life is very short
You don't love me anymore
So I'm never going to see you again
I'm never going to write you a letter
Never going to call you on the phone
I'm never going to drive by your house
I'm never going to catch you coming outside
Never going to walk up your walk
And ring your bell
Feel you fall into my arms
I'm never going to see you
I'm never going to see you
I'm never going to see you again
You're gone for good"

Ugly Baby Judges You 2008-11-30 11:28:32 AM
I nominate the entire album "Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward" by A Silver Mt. Zion as one of the most crushingly sad records ever made. Listening to that album is the auditory equivalent of watching "Requiem For A Dream" over and over and over again.

/nice to see love for the Dresden Dolls here on Fark

I can see that. I would add:
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

This one tears me up just thinking about it. I have a close friend who lost her son in September and this song just brings it all to the fore.

Yahoo! Music's comments section aren't quite teh awsomeness that is YouTube, but they're close:

Seriously, this is a HORRIBLE list. The only artist that belongs here is roy orbison and you got the song wrong you dummy. Crying is the song. Anyway what about solitude by Sabbath....have you ever even heard it??? what about cemetary gate by Pantera??? These songs convey real pain and emptiness!""

What's his Fark handle? I think this guy is a regular in Beatles threads.

Richard and Linda Thompson - Has He Got a Friend For Me?

Works in particular because that album is full of doomy, apocalyptic, epically hopeless songs, but he still threw in one perfect teen angst song.

He's got the haunt of the sea in his eyes
He wouldn't notice me passing by
I could be in the gutter, or dangling down from a tree
