If I had access to some movies & books I could probably survive without the internet. I absolutely love lighthouse to the point that I not only ensure I buy a new lighthouse calendar every year, have 2 sets of lighthouse windchimes, but I've also been to each & every lighthouse on the Oregon coast, with the exception of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse (Terrible Tilly) & that's because it's accessible by helicopter only (located one mile offshore from Tillamook Head). However, I have viewed it through binoculars.

If only I had a commercial boat operator's license. And were strate. And had married.

I'd actually love that job, if marriage weren't a seeming requirement. First job I've ever seen that required a marital status. Hmph.

It doesn't say you have to be married, just that they want a couple.

FTA...Pat Diamond was the first lighthouse keeper after it reopened as a bed-and-breakfast nearly 30 years ago.

"We had some crazy nights out there," said Diamond, who's now a mom of twin 9-year-olds in Los Altos. "Not much is printable. I was single and in my 20s, let me put it that way."

Diamond initially took the job with a boyfriend, "but he went a little haywire" and her next co-keeper was Fanning, who at the time was in his 70s. They made an odd pair but managed to keep the operation afloat, she said.

I stand corrected. DNRE[ntire]FA. But there still remains the matter of the commercial boat license, which I don't. I've only sailed. Sighhhhh... It would be lovely, if they would pay me the entire salary the pay a couple to keep the place up, and all I had to do (besides the basic maintenance I would on my own home anyway) was ferry people twice a week and cook 2 gourmet meals...

It sounds strange, but you really would be amazed at what your brain filters out, if it's constant and non-bone-shattering. A friend lived right under (well, not directly, but nearly) the BART tracks at the Bayfair station, which is a transfer point three main routes of trains. When I first hung out at his place, the sound of the trains roaring over head drove me nuts. After hanging out time and time again, I found I didn't even notice it. (And no, it wasn't because the house was well-insulated.) We'd be playing video games or whatever and I'd actually have to pause to see if the trains were still running... I'd just stopped noticing.

Think of it this way: Do you see your nose? No. Because it's always there, so your brain filters it out. I have glasses with a nose piece that's cinched into the lense itself and when I first started wearing them, the damn thing irritated me constantly. Now I have to actually try to see it.

I live not too far from the BART tracks as well, and I don't even notice the trains. I can hear them, if I try to, but otherwise, I just don't notice them. (And no, our insulation isn't that good, so it doesn't really block out the noise.)

Actually, I checked their site (new window). They claim most guests don't "find the foghorn objectionable". I wouldn't mind unplugging and living on an island for a while.

In brutal honesty, I would not and could not ever disrespect how much of a value a foghorn/lighthouse is to navigation.

Well, it's not like you're 800 miles offshore. Getting groceries is going to be a bit of a biatch, and you get tired of seing your SO 24/7. You might want to put in a "cabin fever" clause in there somewhere.

I live about 2 blocks from some train tracks/crossing, mostly freight trains, but Amtrak too. I can clearly hear the clanging signal when the crossing bars are triggered as well as the different train horns (freight vs Amtrak). There is something so lonely & sad sounding about a train horn heard in the middle of the night.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I could even do without the internet.

50-75 books on my "to-read" list plus ~10 or so for reference material.

100ish movies from my "how the hell have I not seen this, it's a classic!" list.

There, I'm set. If I start to go nuts for lack of electronics, I'll have a DS and some games sent, but I doubt that'd happen.

Actually, if anyone who knows of any other, similar things could post a "jobs to work for a year or two that will let you catch up on your reading/movie watching in solitude (or with your wife) and doesn't pay a pauper's salary" list, that would be AWESOME. I'd love to take a job like that for a while to make sure that all of these "must read/watch/finish/learn before I die" lists actually have a chance of being finished.

/ Only 24, so I should have a while
// But you should see the length of some of these lists...

Not really. Give it a couple months and if waves of hell, cut off from family asking WTF, shiat for resourses, 70 ft waves, maintenance, politics of keeping it running, then go ahead.

It's not as romantic as you think. Would be a dream job for me too maybe, but not at 40k a year for that. I'd end up as fish bait. Someone has to cough up more cash for that type of work.

Joce678 2008-11-30 06:03:23 AM
Ok, anecdote time...

There's a lighthouse near here in the middle of some housing, tall tower blocks to be precise. We went to see it a few weeks ago and on the way there I joked about what a bummer it must be to have a big rotating beacon shining in your window all night.

Here it is - quite pretty, right?

www.agilciudad.com

Here it is from a less flattering angle. You see those building in the background, well guess what....?

personal.telefonica.terra.es

Yep, you guessed it. The light hits them square on. All night, every night.

Even worse, they're building some brand new apartment blocks right next to the lighthouse. Wonder how many people will fail to figure it out before handing over their life savings.

And seriously, how hard is it to stick some black paper on the landward windows of a lighthouse?

I guess your partially correct... I wouldn't want to be out in San Fransisco, but up on Lake Superior.

If I had only finished my U.S. Coast Guard commercial boat operator's license course!!!

No fooling: that would be my dream job. The fog horn would fade into the background after the first hour I was there and I'd never notice it. Cooking and cleaning for strangers would be a draw back, but I'd happily do it.

(sigh)

Nobody's questioned why the foghorn would sound 24/7, even when there wasn't any fog? Unless it's always foggy, which would suck.
