Sad to see him go. Think he was the last architect of note left that studied with Frank Lloyd Wright. And the Sydney Opera house is one of the most beautiful things ever conceived let alone built.

Too bad it's falling apart.

I like Oslo, Norway's opera house because it makes people look like penguins ready to dive off an iceberg

* Planning started late 1940s

* Site chosen 1954

* Competition for design started 1955, got 233 from 32 countries

* 1957 Jørn Utzon's design announced as winner & Utzon arrives to supervise construction

* Old tram depot on site demolished 1958, construction begins March 1959

* 1961 spat erupts about who designed construction method for roof ribs, Utzon eventually buggers off home (Denmark) in 1966

* Opened by the Queen in 1973, a mere 13 years late

* Final bill $102 million, only $95 million over budget

So concept guy, but he packed it in a good 7 years before the project finished

Edgar Tafel is still alive. He may not be as renown as Wright's other students, but he's certainly well-known you being a student of Wright's.

So he is. For some reason I thought he'd died.

@ Hiro's Protagonist, that looks more like Canada Place in Vancouver, Canada.

Utzon didn't study with Wright.
But still kinda sad. He designed a lot of nice buildings around Denmark.

Dansker: Utzon didn't study with Wright.

Well worked for Wright, but working for Wright was in a way studying with him.

Timdesuyo 2008-11-30 04:43:08 AM
I thought the SOH has been universally panned for having terrible accoustics.

When did he work for Wright?
Utzon was partly inspired by his works, but as far as I know, they only met once in the late 40s, and never had any kind of working relationship.

Yeah, and people complain about supermodels' personalities as well. It's not what's inside that counts, in this case . . .

Wrong building.
Wrong country.
Wrong continent.
Wrong hemisphere.

Although they both are described as "sails" for roofs.

Browngonch was right. BC Place in Vancouver. Cruise ship terminal, convention center and typical overpriced Vancouver hotel.

Had my company Christmas party at the convention center last night. :P

Phil Moskowitz: none of you have seen Fitzcarraldo, have you?

I have. I've also seem the documentary about the movie with scenes from the first version of the film, with James Coburn playing Fitzcarraldo and Mick Jagger as his sidekick.

/once a picture of Klaus Kinski with a gramaphone, playing opera into the Amazon has been posted, there's really not that much more that can be said on the subject.
//Slashies!!!
