Am I racist for completely and utterly agreeing with him?

You're supposed to blame the government for not shoveling more of everyone else's money their way. Duh.

So how ingrained is this attitude? I've two Aussie and one Kiwi friend (yes I know how the Aussies treat the Kiwis like they're from Alabama). They all seem to have this attitude towards the "Abos". I'm aware of some of the history, I'm wondering more about the recent history (as in the past 40-50 years).

Let's just say it's not going to go away any time soon.

Any good informative books or anything to recommend? All most 'Muricans know about 'Stralians is media hyped homogenized BS. We 'Muricans had a short time period in the early '70s where we patted ourselves on the back for being so "understanding" of the aboriginal people of North America. Any sort of similar "movement" down there?

Off the top of my head, not really, but you might want to wiki stuff on the stolen generation and google aboriginal alchoholism.

Will do. Thanks. I've done a little reading on it, just hoping for a little bit of homegrown knowledge.

BTW, one could wiki much the same for American Indians. There are many good writings upon life today on the reservations.

When you slander a whole race because of an ill-informed notion that they are all lazy, welfare scabbing, violent drunks, it's generally considered racism.

Having said that, I live close to Eveleigh street and walk past it to get home and I wouldn't pass it at night.

Hmmm... Our fourth grade teacher played the record and taught us this song when we were studying Australia. Wonder if the Kookaburra song is racist as well?

I grew up watching Little Black Sambo on TV and remember when the housekeeper on Tom & Jerry was black. Its all part of history and you can't bury it with political correctness.

Thats crazy. Not EVERY aboriginal is lazy.

And racism denotes the idea that a particular group is inferior or superior BECAUSE of their race.

I think Aboriginals who are in a lot of trouble need to focus internally and see what they can do to improve then
immediate situation, then concentrate on long-term social improvement.

Nobody is maltreating the Abos, right? (If there's anybody watching, I mean.)

If you read what he is saying, he's actually condemning Aboriginal culture rather than the "race".

Australian Aboriginals make up 2.32% of the population.

Australian prison populations are (on average) 20% indigenous, as of 2001. I can't find more recent data, but I'm going to assume the trend has continued upwards.

And yet, somehow it's all my fault, as a 4th generation Australian I'm to blame for all their problems, I stole their land and children, forced them to drink, and need to apologise and give them lots and lots of money, land, cars, and cigarettes.

Also, to answer the lazy statement as made by Rolf:

(Based on 2001 stats) Nationally, 46% of all Indigenous people aged 15-64 years were not in the labour force in 2001. This indicates that they were not actively engaged in the labour market, for reasons including carer responsibilities, illness, disability or lack of market opportunities. By comparison, 27% of the non-Indigenous population in the same age group were not participating in the labour force

So yeah, if that means I'm racist then I am. And I will be up until the day they start taking responsibility for their communities, pride in their heritage, lay of the sauce, and stop destroying every house that they're given.

The only time I've ever been burgled, it was by my aboriginal neighbours (I saw them selling my stereo out the front of their house). The only time I've been mugged, it was by an aboriginal at a train station. The only time my parents had someone invade their house while they were home, it was an aboriginal (Dad caught him and sat on him till the cops arrived). The only time my car has been broken into, it was aboriginals trying to steal it (3am, I scared them off with a curtain rod). When the old lady that lived next to me started yelling for help, it was because 2 aboriginal girls had pushed their way into her house, knocked her over, and started stealing her shiat. Every crime I can recall being committed against me has been by aboriginals.

So yes, I guess I am racist, and at this point an angry one, but like the "poor aboriginals" I'm just a product of my environment.
