State Rep. Tom Riner, a Southern Baptist minister, tucked the God provision into Homeland Security legislation as a floor amendment that lawmakers overwhelmingly approved two years ago.

Good grief. Kentucky is being run by a group of complete and utter morons.

Morons and Religious Nuts tend to be found in the same places.

Why are we spending money on it if God's going to take care of it?

Too funny.

Benevolent Misanthrope [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 03:14:59 PM
Specifically, Homeland Security is ordered to publicize God's benevolent protection in its reports, and it must post a plaque at the entrance to the state Emergency Operations Center with an 88-word statement that begins, "The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God."

Holy. Farking. Schitt.

Literally.

Isn't there something in the Constitution about the State not promoting any religion? Seriously? Guys?

And trust me - my personal safety and security is achieved quite nicely without reliance on any god, almighty or not. It's more reliant on being aware of my surroundings, not doing anything stupid, and ownership of a shotgun and target pistol.

How the Fark do morons like this survive?

SurfaceTension [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 03:16:16 PM
What scares me here is that it's only a small step from this to declaring anyone who doesn't believe in "Almighty God" to BE a terrorist.

/Atheist
//not moving to Kentucky, ever

i think this might run into some problems with the first amendment...

anyways

I'm pretty sure the God people are the reason we need anti-terror laws and security in the first place. Would the ironic tag have worked here, as well? I propose that the fail tag would be fitting, too.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 03:29:15 PM
Someone should tell Kentucky that the only God they need is the Ace of Spades.

Ender's [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 03:39:02 PM
"This is recognition that government alone cannot guarantee the perfect safety of the people of Kentucky," Riner said. "Government itself, apart from God, cannot close the security gap. The job is too big for government."

Ever heard of the statement, "God helps those who help themselves"?

It sounds like these guys are saying, "We can't do this. We need to put God on the books so he'll help us out."

What day are these people from, anyways? Religion isn't for everyone. I don't know why people always think it is.

There are no words to describe on how stupid this is.

They are being forced to do this. What the hell?

"It's very sad to me that we do this sort of thing," said Stein, a frequent critic of efforts to mix religion and government. "It takes away from the seriousness of the public discussion over security, and it clearly hurts the credibility of this office if it's supposed to be depending on God, first and foremost."

Well at least that Kathy Stein has got her head on straight.

Thorndyke Barnhard 2008-11-28 04:20:00 PM
Allahuakbar!

Talk about so absurdly and ironically missing the point of the problem you are mandated to address that you actually adopt the root causes of the problem.

Face-farking-palm.

DistendedPendulusFrenulum 2008-11-28 04:23:28 PM
I think it is the state's role to weigh in on all matters spiritual. I'd like to see the government come down on the side of transubstantiation, and tell the Truth to those who believe in consubstantiation.

I think an appropriate use of legislative time and money would be to take up the issue of dispensationalism versus postmilleniallism, the latter of which is True. Not only can we not combat terror without the assistance of God, we can also not protect against erroneous doctrine without the assistance of the government. As soon as we amend the Constitution to elevate Jesus King of America, we can get down to the business of the courts setting punishments for straying from the Official Doctrine--and you can bet I will be voting Transubstantiationalist!

.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It's so easy to lose the way, here on earth at the start of this new century.

Sometimes, I think a bunch of these people who tell me to look to Jesus are really just tricking me like everyone else.

When it all gets sorted out, I think the people who used God to mislead others are going to be in a lot more trouble than the folks who just got hungry or scared and did dumb things.

rodeofrog 2008-11-28 04:44:33 PM
Aeonite: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That looks vaguely familiar. And now that you bolded part of it, I'm starting to think that a lot of people ignore that limitation on the powers of Congress.

My God knocks planes out of the sky with his dick. He wouldn't have let that attack happen. He'd have been all like... 'Ooh, I don' think so!' while dickslapping a 767.

1: Stop trying to use the legal system to ram your god down everyone's throats!
2: Other than abortion clinics, which will get attacked by God-fearing Christians, what is so damned important in Kentucky that terrorists are going to bother attacking them?

In other news, Russia is reportedly developing a new arsenal of God-proof missiles to counter the threat.

To paraphrase Doug Stanhope, apparently Tuesdays are god's day off.

As amended, Homeland Security's religious duties now come before all else, including its distribution of millions of dollars in federal grants and its analysis of possible threats.

Approves.

Religious duties should come before wasting federal money. I'd much rather have them sacrificing politicians to the Elder Gods than perpetuating this "homeland security" terror.
