Actually, it's probably a good thing - from what I've read, Beatles concerts were notoriously crappy

The Beatles were a studio band. Their music was very intricate, with a lot of musicians. Hard to accomplish live what you can in the studio.

Where did you read that? Most concert footage I have seen the sound of screaming fans drowned out the sound of the boys playing. Oh yeah...and subby - Fark you in the ear!

Werent their concerts in Germany really awesome? I know it was early in their career but that is when they played stripped down simple rock n roll. As their they grew as musicians they devoted themselves to studio and gave up on live music. If they continued to tour with eachother I bet they would have broke up long before the did. I would like to see this video with the audio.

The thing I don't get is, why record a concert if there's no sound? That defeats the purpose to me, unless you want to watch a video of some dudes dancing around on a stage and making gestures to silence.

What was personal video and audio devices like in 1964?

I don't think a home video camera had sound until a Super 8 camera with sound was introduced in the 70's.

/movie camera, rather

Haha. I found that link. There was no sound, again, because there were no capturing devices on the cameras. The "Fortunately, it's without sound" comment was in Fark sarcasm. The film is valuable because it is the only known existing footage (in color) of the Beatle's only stop in Kansas City.

karnal: Where did you read that?

I saw videos awhile back that were mixed from the raw soundboard of, I beleive, the Shea Stadium concert. Crowd noise was well eliminated, and they did a lot of work to get the audio to sound accurate.

The music was horrible. But its not really their fault- they couldn't friggin hear each other much less their own instruments. Off key, out of time, just bad.

But still better than most contemporary music.

Don't you hate concert photos? If someone's going to use this footage (inchage?) they can just add a live recording. Anywho, you can find live Beatles on the intertubes with the screaming filtered out. It still has that Beatles magic, even though the harmonies are lots looser, and of course, no studio tricks.

Dear Jerk: and of course, no studio tricks.

They used auto-tune?

Not quite.

The Beatles music in the era they were still playing live concerts wasn't that intricate, and didn't really involve more people than the band and maybe a keyboard player.

Now, anything after Rubber Soul was definitely too intricate and complex to be performed live, but the Beatles had quit touring by that point (mostly for the "too intricate" reason). The Fab Faux do a damn good job of recreating the post-Rubber Soul stuff these days, though.

From the early concert footage of the Beatles, this is all you can hear. Even if the guy's camera had audio, how good do you think it would have been? And who was the opener? And anyone could easily overdub it with soundboards of the show, right? I mean hopefully the band would have been recording their own stuff.

Oh well, I saw this and thought $6500 was incredibly cheap for footage like this, but it is only 51 seconds of Beatles.

And 32 minutes was considered concert-length back then?

Of course, the early stuff was mostly 2-minute songs anyway so that's 16 songs.

I wholeheartedly approve of this headline.

I regret I have only one '+1' to give.

Most overrated band ever.

I'd have to put them in my top 5 overrated bands ever also. Yes, I do understand their place in music history, just not why their music was ever really popular. I'd put the Doors higher than the Beatles though.

The Beatles don't do anything for me. Boomer males are all gay for them.

I think I'd have to go...

1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Nirvana
4. The Doors
5. Metallica

That's assuming that anyone actually rates them highly.

Really, that band has no ear to it at all.

1. The Beatles - wrong
2. Led Zeppelin - wrong
3. Nirvana - wrong
4. The Doors - won't argue here
5. Metallica - here either
