This has the potential to be a very interesting race. Arlen Sphincter is in for some tough shots I think.

Noooo, Allyson Schwartz ftw.

Nope, according to FiveThirtyEight.

But nice try.

Not sure what the bigger joke is:

Chris Matthews running for Senate or someone out there linking to the Huffington Post.

chris matthews might be a dumbass, but dammit he seems really fun

EvilElecBlanket [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 04:35:40 PM
Does anyone remember when he was slightly less crazy and his show was called "Politics"? I miss that Chris Matthews.

/His book "Hardball" is a good read

michaeld5 2008-11-28 04:39:28 PM
Even I would vote for a Democrat over this piece of vermin:
images.salon.com

magic bullet indeed, Mr. Specter.

Digeratus 2008-11-28 04:47:11 PM
Any discussion of Chris Matthews is meaningless without Neville Chamberlain's appeasement.

deltabourne 2008-11-28 04:57:00 PM
What's with this trend of entertainers/pundits running for politics just because they have tons of public exposure? Not sure I like it at all.

unyon [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 05:01:24 PM
Digeratus: Any discussion of Chris Matthews is meaningless without Neville Chamberlain's appeasement.

That never fails to bring a smile to my face. As a non-American, my opinion doesn't matter. However, I think Matthews is an intelligent, knowledgeable, and feisty man that would serve you well in the US senate.

mferris 2008-11-28 05:04:34 PM
Well, at least we know what Matthews' party affiliation is now.

FlyPanAm [TotalFark] 2008-11-28 05:09:27 PM
HIs head would explode from impatience by the end of his first week.

I bet he would win.

deltabourne: What's with this trend of entertainers/pundits running for politics just because they have tons of public exposure? Not sure I like it at all.

You talk all faggy and your shiats all retarded.

jjorsett 2008-11-28 05:23:09 PM
If an ill-tempered, tax-dodging, washed up "comedian" like Al Franken can get within a hair's breadth of a Senate seat, why not an ill-tempered, leg-thrillin', bloviating hack like Matthews? It looks like it's the season for "Send a Douchebag to Congress", so he may as well take his shot.

generaltimmy 2008-11-28 05:29:07 PM
Outside of the magic bullet issue years ago, why would anyone run against him? He is the democrats' best friend.

randomjsa 2008-11-28 05:35:24 PM
So Chris Mathews is trying to go from a profession where being a partisan liberal hack disqualifies his credibility to a a profession where he has no credibility anyway?

deltabourne: What's with this trend of entertainers/pundits running for politics just because they have tons of public exposure? Not sure I like it at all.

Well, he was an aide to House Speaker Tip O'Neill for 6 years and presidential speechwriter for 4. It's not like he has only been a pundit.

Wendy's Chili 2008-11-28 05:55:20 PM
I'm pretty far left, but there's not enough beer in the world to get me to vote for Matthews over Specter

mferris: Well, at least we know what Matthews' party affiliation is now.

?? It's always been pretty transparent.

Eh, unless someone better comes along, I'd vote for him.

It didn't work the first time, so it is unlikely to work again. I'm tired of blowing winnable elections by running a celebretard. Specter is beatable, but not if the dems run Matthews.

Martstar 2008-11-28 06:14:11 PM
You know, I had no idea Matthews was that old. It says in the article that he's 62, but I had thought he was in his early 50s tops.

Chris Matthews is too busy kissing Obama's ass, to run for Senate or do anything else.

NYZooMan 2008-11-28 06:39:08 PM
Matthews (O-fellate)

That was an epic pwn. My opinion of Tweety increased significantly that day.

Brubold 2008-11-28 06:43:08 PM
mferris: Well, at least we know what Matthews' party affiliation is now.

Everyone should have already known because of his political work in the past. The liberals just don't like to admit he's one of them because to admit it supports the whole "liberal media" thing.

Bill the unknowing 2008-11-28 07:11:02 PM
With Chris Mathews, it's hard to know what you're going to get. Same with Olbermann.

Pundits are paid to bloviate - especially these 2 (for the liberals). But that doesn't necessarily diminish their intelligence. Yeah, he's like a cocker spaniel who's had a bit of coke (the thrill up the leg thing was....questionable...at best...but sure sounded like he had his head in Obama's lap at that point) but he's actually done the homework in the past and COULD probably serve effectively. But I wonder how he shows he would work for the people in his current role? You can run, but you ought to be running FOR something. I'm sure the people of Pennsylvania can think of a couple other politicians that would do a better job FOR Pennsylvania than Mathews.

Wendy's Chili: I'm pretty far left, but there's not enough beer in the world to get me to vote for Matthews over Specter

Really? If you're actually "pretty far left", I doubt that statement is true. That, or you're an idiot.

What ever happened to voting based on policy?

CravenMorehead 2008-11-28 07:29:45 PM
If this gets him off TV then more power to him.

Third Day Mark 2008-11-28 07:32:17 PM
I'm seeing alot of remarks that I saw when Obama first decided to run initially. "We can beat (Specter, in this case), but not if we run Candidate X."

Senator Palin yields the floor to Senator Matthews.

/Palin as Senator - Book it. Done.

SU 2008-11-28 07:32:25 PM
I like Chris Matthews. His show is great entertainment, he spouts off whatever is on his mind in the heat of the moment. But more than that, he isn't a complete idiot and he doesn't let his guests get away with talking via code words - he pushes them to describe what exactly it is they are trying to convey. Sure, he is partisan but I'm okay with that because he doesn't try to cloak it unlike some other well known pundits.

Third Day Mark 2008-11-28 07:33:53 PM

Check what happened on November 4th then ask that question again.

/Its still alive and well.

Dwight_Yeast 2008-11-28 07:42:43 PM
I suspect our governor (Ed Rendell) is just waiting for Spector to die so he can appoint himself to the seat. If Arlen's still in power when Rendell's term is up, I have a feeling he'll run and win.

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm 2008-11-28 07:46:23 PM
Chris Matthews is probably the only member of the media that I would vote for.

Uh, Al Franken could still very well win and would probably be one of the sharper minds in the senate.

well this past election proved that credibility doesn't mean shiat. Matthews wins in a landslide... and not the 52% to 46% kind of "landslide" :P

As someone who hopes Franken wins, even I find that scary.

Chrissy needs to have Ann Coulter on again to bash Elizabeth Edwards.

/that was the last episode of 'Hardball' for me.

I didn't think Chris was done slobbering on Barack's knob.

generaltimmy: Outside of the magic bullet issue years ago, why would anyone run against him? He is the democrats' best friend.

Arlen Specter NEVER votes with the democrats when the vote's close. The Senate democrats can't stand him because he campaigns on bipartisanship but when there a remote chance that his vote would actually matter, he votes with his party.

One of my favorite things ever is when Franken put the screws to Bill O'Reilly on the C-span at the Book expo.
