Zing! Short People is satire, anyway. The guy is a kind of journeyman song writer and I guess I am a journeyman listener, but some of his songs I just love. Plus 17 (I think) Oscar nominations, 12 Grammy nominations - he's being voted on by the people who do this for a living.

Newman's success at Oscar time is due to the system, not his talent. Kid friendly, never controversial, the Disney/Pixar people probably have him on speed dial. The farking Oscars had 3(!) songs from Enchanted nominated out of the five slots last year. I'm still amazed Three Six Mafia won a few years ago, the Academy must've felt very pleased with themselves after that.

/SO glad Hansard/Irglova won for Falling Slowly
// Still bitter about Aimee Mann losing to Phil Collins in '99

Do people really think Short People is the most controversial song
Randy Newman's ever done?

Clearly they haven't heard Rednecks (new window) , Sail Away (new window) or Political Science 101 (new window)

Say what you will, hes certainly an original.

I love "In Germany Before the War." Plus the three you mentioned. Plus Short People. Yep, he is weird. And anything he has written will outlast "My Heart Will Go On and On and ON and ON" from Titanic.

Baby take off your coat...(real slow)
Baby take off your shoes...(here I'll take your shoes)
Baby take off your dress
Yes yes yes
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

Go on over there and turn on the light...no all the lights
Now come back here and stand on this chair...that's right
Raise your arms up in to the air...shake 'em...

Hey, I think it's hot.

You know, his new record is EXTREMELY good. Funny, sad, intelligent, acerbic. Surprisingly great.

Recommended.

But first, a few words in defense of our country:

I'd like to say a few words
In defense of our country
Whose people aren't bad nor are they mean
Now the leaders we have
While they're the worst that we've had
Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen

Just a few words in defense of our country
Whose time at the top
Could be coming to an end
Now we don't want their love
And respect at this point is pretty much out of the question
But in times like these
We sure could use a friend

A President once said,
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"
Now it seems like we're supposed to be afraid
It's patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
That's what terror means, doesn't it?
That's what it used to mean

Randy Newman is unquestionably one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I thought that his stuff was just the Disney crap until I heard Nilsson Sings Newman. His piano playing is friggin' sardonic as hell.

The Family Guy bit was funny, but I worry that it's keeping other members of my generation from realizing how brilliant Newman is.

Being voted on by people who do this for a living? You mean like when Republican politicians vote for Republicans?

Argument from authority doesn't make Newman sound any less like he's trying to vomit on the keyboard.
