Vladimir Putin is a Cold Hard biatch.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-11-27 05:49:16 AM
"But other countries have also known their bleak and terrible moments," he said. "In any event, we have never used nuclear weapons against civilians, and we have never dumped chemicals on thousands of kilometers of land or dropped more bombs on a tiny country than were dropped during the entire Second World War, as was the case in Vietnam."

True, Pooty, but Stalin's reign was still far worse than all that put together and squared.

And that's supposed to do WHAT exactly?

Do they not have the internets in Russia? Seriously, is this guy that out of touch that he thinks you can still control what people can read about history?

Makh [TotalFark] 2008-11-27 07:06:23 AM
We have never gathered up 20 million of our citizens and sent them to a cold harsh prison to die from over work or killed them in other ways. My Russian friend tried to get me to understand the brutality of Stalin, she told us that he may have killed from 14 to 20 million people through the Gulag and various other means.

Of COURSE they have the internet. And they can see that Western world has used it to put up THOUSANDS of lying websites claiming Stalin was a bad, bad man - as opposed to a great leader and Father of the Nation, adored by all.

That. We in the "West" have done some unspeakable things... to our "enemies". We didn't do it to our own citizens, and what we did pales in comparison to the purges and gulags.

I can see Putin looking at the great firewall of China and think that it works perfectly. "What a brilliant solution" he must think to himself, never having heard of proxies.

Nothing like the Russians to remind us Americans that, hey, at the end of the day? We're alright guys.

The internets in Russia are filled with thousands of hard-core nationalists who promote the government line and call anyone who disagrees a pussy and a traitor.

Compared to those guys, Fark's 101st Fighting Keyboardists are a bunch of amateurs.

NOooooo...nice try...but the USA has done very evil shiat too. Viet Nam was incredible. Or did you get brainwashed in 2000 like many other people when there was this weird surge in articlesunprecedented revisionism about how the US "won" Viet Nam with their noble and effective military?

Man that was a weird year for propaganda shifting. Strangely similar to what the Kremlin is doing, but in the American public sphere. Archives and books and stuff were left intact but the mass media were saying weeeeird things. Then 9/11 happened and it was all forgotten and the media had a whole new role to play, thankfully.

Yeah, but all we ever hear about in the US, or see movies about, is Hitler, Hitler, Hitler, Hitler! Nazi, Nazi, Nazi!!
Funny that.

Stalin killed more Jews than Hitler ever did in his wettest dream.

Only a couple million people were killed in Vietnam, a far cry from 20 million in the USSR; and almost ALL in Vietnam were casualties of war, i.e. collateral damages.
The Vietnamese were NEVER systematically rounded up and sent to be liquidated by the US.

Nice try though, snapperhead.

Most Russkies ALREADY believe the Putin version of history.

So no firewall is necessary.

It's not even about the numbers. Like Occam's Chainsaw said above. The West does nasty shiat, but at least it does it to it's enemies. Because war is hell. But when peace becomes hell, that's when you really earn the title "Evil".

Because Stalin was Hitler's ally before the Nazis attacked and he switched sides, because his actions in Eastern Europe were often no better than Hitler's.

And this moral ambiguity doesn't sit well with the Western, Hollywood version of the war, which want to portray the war as one unbroken, glorious march from Normandy to Berlin and ignore any shortcomings of the Western Allies when dealing with Stalin.

Teeth of the Tiger was good and The whole Jack Ryan as president was interesting. seeing him deal with only getting what he needed to know was fun.

Mr Logo 2008-11-27 09:36:39 AM
It was far more than 20 million. Perhaps 20 million died in the gulags.

He killed 10 million in the Ukrane alone in one year around '32-'34.

Stopped reading after "The Bear and the Dragon" (think that was the title.) I just got tired of the series, but I've been thinking about getting back into them because that was so long ago.

/Read "Executive Orders" as soon as it came out.

hehe... no, I'm just obsessed with Russia getting its shiznit together somehow, preferably under a benevolent dictatorship. every other country signing up for our language and culture is making the world dull. plus, it's about time we got back to fighting other whiteys.

plus, it won't hurt the James Bond franchise to have them back. is it me or does having Bond with an Eastern European chick (and no Soviet Union) make the story seem really dated.

Some estimates put Stalin and Mao's death toll at a half of billion. This is at the high end of the estimate pool, but even if it is half that, that is 250,000,000 of their own citizens these Communism governments killed.

Hmmm...if the angry, well-armed corpses of their victims fell on the reanimated evils that are Stalin and Hitler...I might start to feel a little better.

I'll tell you one thing, it would be the first Stalin biopic during which I could eat popcorn.
