It would really be nice if that whole bag of fail would just end. We really shouldn't make National Foreign policy based on the feelings of a handful of butt-hurt expats in Florida.

The most important question: Does Obama pronounce it Coo-BA or CUE-ba?

Then we'll know what side he's REALLY on.

Might as well. The decades long embargo hasn't worked and now is just making us look bad. Obama didn't need the vengeful Cubano vote to get elected so there's no reason for him to keep it in place.

I'd like to hear one reasonable argument to maintain the embargo.

Anyone know of one?

Releasing the embargo will drive up demand for Cuban cigars beyond Cuba's production capability, causing a decrease in quality as they ramp up productivity to meet demand.

Don't fark with my friend who smokes cigars.

Man, this tinhorn dictator tells Obama, "Come down here, give us back Gitmo, and go home with the flag that flew over it".

Talk about a total F YOU.

And no comment from Obama or his people?

This is off to a bad start.

bad start? the interview was done before the election, and Obama isn't president yet, this is just a warmed up rehashed story that should have been fed to the dog two weeks ago.

Trying to rid us of stupid, wasteful Cold War era policies = hating the country.

Yeah.

You know, maybe we'd be better off if less people put country before world.

Look, if we just keep waiting, Fidel is going to die. He can't possibly last more than a couple more years. Then Cuba will have a brief civil war, ending with Raul Castro's overthrow, and the shattered remains of a ruined country will be available for takeover by whatever greedy company wants to ravage the carcass.

It sounds great, why should Obama try to salvage anything before the inevitable collapse we've worked so hard to bring about?

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 11:53:41 PM
actually his article in The Nation was very interesting reading.
He's a smart man. He,Christopher Hitchens and Douglas Brinkley went to visit Raul Castro and Hugo Chavez. It was an interesting article. Can't say I agree with everything in the article but it was well written.

We spent the next two days in Chávez's constant company, with many hours of private meetings among the four of us. In the private quarters of the president's plane, I find that on the subject of baseball Chávez's command of English soars. When Douglas asks if the Monroe Doctrine should be abolished, Chávez, wanting to choose his words carefully, reverts to Spanish to detail the nuances of his position against this doctrine, which has justified US intervention in Latin America for almost two centuries. "The Monroe Doctrine has to be broken," he says. "We've been stuck with it for over 200 years. It always gets back to the old confrontation of Monroe versus Bolívar. Jefferson used to say that America should swallow, one by one, the republics of the south. The country where you were born was based on an imperialistic attitude." ...

...Hitchens sits quietly, taking notes throughout the conversation. Chávez recognizes a flicker of skepticism in his eye. "CREES-to-fer, ask me a question. Ask me the hardest question." They share a smile. Hitchens asks, "What's the difference between you and Fidel?" Chávez says, "Fidel is a communist. I am not. I am a social democrat. Fidel is a Marxist-Leninist. I am not. Fidel is an atheist. I am not. One day we discussed God and Christ. I told Castro, I am a Christian. I believe in the Social Gospels of Christ. He doesn't. Just doesn't. More than once, Castro told me that Venezuela is not Cuba, and we are not in the 1960s.

I wonder if he realizes the irony of portraying a very notorius gay rights activist and at the same time being the spokesperson of Castro's Cuba with its history of represion and brutality.

So you're saying that since school integration was a policy enacted under (iirc) LBJ that it's no longer the nation's policy?

You're saying that the EPA ceased to exist once Nixon resigned since the policies of the EPA were "his" policies?

You're under the impression that the current embargo of Iran is not at all a current embargo but rather is something that Jimmy Carter did three decades ago?

(oh! I see! You just have to reach to find a Democrat to "blame" for everything and anything that is stupid and nonsensical, regardless of the bipartisan nature of that stupid? Yeah. Cooked pasta isn't as flimsy as your arguments, loser.)
