(Some Scary Autistic Kid) Stupid Autistic 8-year-old girl kicked out of Girl Scout troop for "scaring the four other girls." Because, you know, it's not like your precious snowflakes will ever have to learn to get along with someone who's different, right?   (disaboom.com) divider line 191

Not every child is comfortable with kids who are different.

My son doesn't know what to do and is deathly afraid of saying/doing the wrong thing, so he usually avoids the situation.

My daughter, on the other hand, usually ends up making friends with them and treating them as they would any other kid (usually what the 'different' kid wants anyways).

Me?... the only time I get uncomfortable is with "bathroom" issues.

The fear is completely understandable. But to turn away somebody who is different because the other kids fear them? That's not right, they need to learn how to deal with situations like that. That girl herself was clearly afraid which is why she ran off. Her parents are obviously trying their best for this girl to live as normal of a life as possible. You'd think parents of disabled kids would be more understanding and try to explain things instead of forcing her out.

My autistic son does just fine in Cub Scouts. And I'm working with local packs and the State DMR to get more disabled boys involved. It's good for kids who spend all day segregated in special ed to have some time with normal kids, and it is good for the normal kids to have exposure to the handicapped.

She's a cutie. She lokks almost exactly like my step daughter did at that age except my step daughter used a tiny little walker.

Ask to move the girl to a troop with other spec needs kids & you get chastised for being intolerant.

Let the kid stay in hopes of helping her adjust to society & get sued for not looking out for the safety of the other kids when she suddenly goes ballistic & hurts one of them.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

TFA: Magi's mother, who was present at the troop meeting, argues that she never endangered anyone but herself and that her child's behavior is normal for her when confronted with unfamiliar situations.

So when the kids runs off, gets lost, and hurts herself, you're not going to sue the troop? You better believe they're going to bounce her for whatever reason they can dream up!

The parents and kids should just learn to deal with it. We spend every Christmas at my parents' house with all of our kids, including my nephew who is five and has autism. Everyone loves him, no one is afraid of him, and we all just give him his space when he needs it.

Hey! I read the article.

And I found out it's IRONIC that she was previously in a regular scout troop for 2 years without any problems and then gets kicked out of the disabled kids group on DAY 1.

Her parents could just put her back in the other group, but they moved her out of it because it was getting too large, hopefully she can find a troop that she'll do ok in.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 07:38:15 PM
I can easily see a scenario where an autistic kid was causing such disruptions that she was an unfairly burdensome imposition on the other kids, and if that's the case it's perfectly reasonable to remove the autistic girl. I can just as easily see a scenario where the parents of the other girls (who were all physically but not mentally disabled) and/or the girls themselves just wanted to get rid of a kid who was annoying but not a real problem.

What I do know is that there's not a single person in this thread who knows what actually happened.

Clearly the autistic child doesn't feel comfortable around kids who are different.

Autism is a name given to a wide range of symptoms. You could just as accurately call it "demon possession."

Some people's demons are small and controllable. Some people's aren't. Not everyone is cut out for scouts, and a lot of kids get kicked out of scouts - and they don't even have developmental problems.

This one girl was ruining the scouts for the other four. I don't see what the problem is.

its a scout troup for special needs kids, and they can't cater to her special needs?

I feel sorry for the kid, but when she "runs off and injures herself" I think she has more problems than not being in Girl Scouts. Clearly, she's got tendencies that could be dangerous, and I don't think it's fair to subject the other kids to that. There's disabled (can't walk, blind, retarded) and then there's disabled (prone to self-injury or violence.) It's a sad, but real, fact of life that some people will NOT be able to do what everyone else can do. I think it's better to accept that than to try and blind yourself to reality.

Of course, it's also possible that the problems from autism manifest in an eight year old are greater than those in a younger child. Or, if not more manifest, at least more noticeable.

Please make them stop.

So a kid with parents who refuse to discipline her and use a made up 'disease' as a justification for having a feral child gets kicked out of a place that actually enforces standards of behavior? The only really amazing part of the whole story is that there's still a place that enforces standards of behavior.

It's the troop for disabled girls. I assume they're all at equal risk, and that the Girl Scouts have taken the appropriate legal action to avoid lawsuits, and, I assume, also give that troop less dangerous activities.

You *are* aware that Autism and Asperger's syndrome aren't exactly the same thing, right? Asperger's is a type of autism, but all autism isn't Asperger's
