I refuse to listen to this clown based on his stupid gimmick.

He could be the greatest player in the history of guitar, but I'll never know.

That guy looks like Mick Mars' uglier brother.

Its a nice rift/ballad/what ever its called.

Gimmick or not its good.

NorCalLos 2008-11-26 05:10:24 PM
That was ok, I guess, but for some odd reason I expect more from a guy with a mask and a KFC bucket on his head?

jj325 [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 05:12:10 PM
He's alright. I'm sure he has somewhat of a cult following because the 13-19 age group keeps refreshing. I will give him credit for being called "erratic" by Axl.

Fleet [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 05:12:48 PM
I'll see your "Whitewash" and raise you a "Interworld and the New Innocence"/"Animal Behavior" medley.

Skip to roughly 3:00 to hear the solo.

vertigo4 2008-11-26 05:13:19 PM
Colma is actually a really good cd. lots of acoustic numbers. and a great introduction to Buckethead.

carmody 2008-11-26 05:20:13 PM
No disrespect to Buckethead, but that ain't a raise, dude.

starchild 2008-11-26 05:35:16 PM
Buckethead has better songs.

/not a raise
//Chinese Democracy is awesome.

blem 2008-11-26 05:50:49 PM
I saw Buckethead live last month. I was in awe the entire time he played.

Colma and Pepper's Ghost are my two favorite albums of his.

Deadwing 2008-11-26 05:51:27 PM
Add some Bootsy Collins (new window) for some Hendrix goodness.

craigdamage 2008-11-26 06:33:41 PM
Buckethead.

Lame gimmick.

I have attempted to appreciate him but he is so utterly devoid of emotion (his playing) that I am utterly unimpressed.

Very nice tone on that vid though.

The whole rhythm section did in no way fit the riffs and licks he is playing. The bass and drums seemed so lifeless and irrelevant. The song sounded EXACTLY like someone who can't write music but can only showcase his own over indulgence.

yadda...yadda...yadda..dime a dozen.

btw:

Frank Zappa had very minimal emotion in his playing and composition but his writing and improv were so clever and interesting...Buckethead? -- No.

Derwood 2008-11-26 06:44:19 PM
soulless shredding. the ballads suck too

everybodylookattheirpants 2008-11-26 06:49:34 PM
I've seen Buckethead live several times. I do have to admit that he has been less and less impressive each time I see him. He doesn't change his set lineup enough (granted he has had some health issues and was working w/ Axl for a bit) and is nowhere near as awesome as he was live about seven or eight years ago. Saw him follow up Incubus as the second opening act for Primus at the Rave in Milwaukee about seven years ago and it was by far the most incredible live guitar performance I've ever seen.

All chicken tender delivery systems and wankery aside, I'll hold with my hand of Link Wray Ace of Spades thank you very much.

mfaby 2008-11-26 07:31:26 PM
Well, you see, here's the difference:

Paco, Al and John could play Buckethead's song; Bucky-boy could NOT
play Paco, Al and John's song.

Bucky is overrated crap and his gimmick has out lived its' usefulness.

phedex 2008-11-26 07:32:35 PM
Saw him live a few months ago in ohio. Fun, fun show.

Just because someone has mastered a form of guitar playing other than classical/blues.. god.. how many more times do i have to read the stupid "its soulless" argument.

Buckethead, for the few things that we know about him, we DO know he is a savant. he's been playing light years ahead of his age since he was 20. He has a natural gift for his style of playing.. dont be ashamed to admit he's good and you'd like to play like him. I practice guitar every day hoping i can write stuff a fraction as cool has he does.

I do wish he would do an interview out of character, one long enough for us to get to know more about him.

dereksmalls 2008-11-26 08:00:50 PM
when I want me some soulless shredding, I usually prefer Satch or Vai

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 08:20:51 PM
Buckethead is pretty far all over the map. Some of his stuff is amazingly tepid, some of it, is just jawdropping. And I'm sure he's just fine knowing some people think so little of music they won't listen to him because of his stage get up.

mfaby: Bucky-boy could NOT
play Paco, Al and John's song.

Ummmm actually he can and already has. Not the exact same song, but stuff that's near identical to it. Also McLaughlin made his career as a shredder. Granted a jazz shredder, but 38 years ago all anyone said was "zOMG you hear how fast McLaughlin plays?".

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 08:27:48 PM
And here's the original shred god

kruppz 2008-11-26 08:43:17 PM
I keep trying to listen to Buckethead, cause I know he's got chops and wild sounds... but I just cant stand him. Dude cant compose an actual song worth crap. No taste.
Ron Thal, on the other hand...

Andric 2008-11-26 08:51:59 PM
Add me tot he "you can't respond to DiMeola with Buckethead and call it a 'raise'." pile.

niteshift 2008-11-26 08:52:02 PM
Lotta hate and elitist...."my guitar can beat your guitar up."

Thanks Subby. I had never heard of this guy....I liked it alot....reminded me of this....

What is the name of that cut?

What is this, Bizarro World poker?

mahavishnunj 2008-11-26 09:01:28 PM
wow, you guys said it already. this is the most failtastic 'raise' yet.

sp0rk_of_psychosis 2008-11-26 09:48:19 PM
in with the "not a raise" crowd. i really like buckethead (f-yer lack of hyperactive brain reaction of appeasement to his byzantine song structures) but this ain't close. his duet with "that 1 guy" was pretty slick a couple weeks ago...but i'd pay 3 or 4x to see the first deal.

/settle for some bach played by segovia
//all in!

Seriously? Never hear of Buckethead?

I'm not a music geek, but even I know who Buckethead is.

FitzShivering 2008-11-26 11:29:33 PM
Buckethead did a nice job on "Sketches of Spain." One of my favorites from his albums.

craigdamage 2008-11-26 11:36:51 PM
Even after I left a most unflattering post above about the way overrated Buckethead, I felt kinda sorry and decided to check out his stuff again and give him another chance......

....he fukcing sucks.

There is absolutely no emotion or feeling in his music.
The musicians who accompany him sound as if merely an afterthought.
His playing reveals nothing sublime or genuine.
Empty,shallow and uninteresting fretboard exercises.

As much contempt as I have for bozos like Vai,Satriana and others--they sound downright glowing and warmly effervescent next to Suck-it-head.

mahavishnunj 2008-11-27 12:01:29 AM
craigdamage: ....he fukcing sucks.

i wouldnt say 'he sucks'. hes got amazing technique, way more than satch or vai or any of those homos. i do agree he has no natural feel whatsoever though, and hes awful when he improvises. ron thal has the market cornered on insane guitar.

NYZooMan 2008-11-27 12:11:53 AM
Always sounds the same.

Hot guitar hasn't really meant shiat in the past 30 years.

Haha....I've immersed myself in deep electronic beats for a while. Guess I'm not in the loop. Of course, you know who silicone soul, plej, and super pumas are....right? :) It's all relative man....I just like what I like....at the moment. It's new music to me so I'm intrigued is all I'm sayin...

And all you guys talking about emotion, or lack thereof...Let me see your top 5....So I can see the context with which you are criticizing from...or better yet....top 20

1. Jimi
2. Duane Allman
3. George Harrison
4. Chuck Berry
5. Mark Knopfler

The hate....let it begin

berklee 2008-11-27 02:10:39 AM
Soul player list:

Hm... no particular order, and I'm probably missing some that I'd consider important.

- Joe Satriani (I'm thinking of the solos in "Cryin'" and "Strange"
- Steve Vai (Bad Horsie - not emotional, but it's clear the feeling that you're supposed to get)
- David Gilmour
- Billy Gibbons
- Joe Bonamassa

berklee 2008-11-27 02:13:56 AM
Other Satch Favourites:

"Time" - can't believe I missed this one, personal fave
"Memories" - live from Dreaming #11

craigdamage 2008-11-27 08:24:11 AM
yikes!

Why the hell do I always forget about Mike Oldfield?

Maybe that is a true indication of how great he is?

His work is so stellar that I am unable to simply associate him with only an instrument. He far transcends his skills on an instrument.

i like brian carroll better

noheadphones 2008-11-27 01:27:09 PM
I really like Buckethead...he was doing some really interesting stuff with Bill Laswell and Praxis in the early 90s. He's a weird cat who just does his weird thing. you love it or hate it.

I'll tell you what...go get Transmutation Mutandis by Praxis, with Bootsie Collins, Laswell, Bernie Worell and Brain and you'll have trouble thinking of a better super-group to come out of the 90s.

That all said, comparing this to Friday Night in San Francisco is one big FAIL.

Hell at least go apples to apples and compare Buckethead's best output to McLaughlin's Birds of Fire...
