What an a-hole.

He is the classic example of what is wrong with politics.

Yes, damn those dirty, dirty Democrats for being in bed with big oil! Contemptible Demon-craps, and their dirty, dirty oil money!

Rangel is so out (if the Democrats know what's good for them).

This is just the fear-mongering Republican attack machine.

That guy loves to screw.

I really hope he gets stripped of his chairmanships. Charlie needs to go.

Nemo's Brother 2008-11-26 11:39:56 AM
Still, if had an (R) after his name, there would be three times the posts by now.

Seconded.

/used to live in his district
//and voted for him

Both parties need to clean up on a whole bunch of deadwood. On either side, we secretly know who they are, even if we don;t admit it to each other.

Befuddled 2008-11-26 11:49:01 AM
If only the Republicans would run decent people for office so Democrats and moderates could vote out the slimey Democrats. Here in California I'd love to vote out Feinstein but somehow the Republicans can always find someone far more scummy to run against her.

If he had an (R) by his name he'd already be in jail.

Randy Cunningham's spent 3 years in jail already. He's asking Bush for a pardon. William Jefferson is still serving in congress. Both got into trouble just about the same time.

An actual news story about corruption in congress will never get great thread numbers when there's a Rocking Obama-Socialism thread just below it.

As nice as that would be in theory, there's no way that any Republican would be able to beat Charlie in his district. His comeuppance (if he gets one at all) will come from the Dems.

Don't apologize for this a-hole.

At least with the Republicans you *know* you're voting for Tax Cheats & Big Corporate Oil Interests.

But the question is, is she his dumb biatch?
If they have any sense, he'll get Dingell'd. There are a couple of hundred Dems who would love to have his spot.

Typical story in this post-Obama world. This guy is sitting pretty watching the money come in (and not have to go back out) and Randy Cunningham is serving time.

What is the only difference? Melanin.

Simplest Quantum System Conceivable: Rangel is so out (if the Democrats know what's good for them).

Sadly, like William Jefferson and Ted Stevens, he lives in a district that will always vote Democrat and no credible challengers will come froward. While Alaskans finally got smart enough to remove Stevens, don't expect that the Republican and Democrats will ever remove corruption on their own.

The voters are unlikely to do the same as Alaska as long as Rangel keeps bringing federal money to district.

Ordell [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 12:56:00 PM
Like every other loathesome politico, the blame ultimately lies not with him but the people who send him back to Washington, scandal after scandal.

Proud of yourselves, Harlem?

/like any of them are here.
//go ahead, call me a racist, see if I care.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-11-26 01:17:16 PM
See, the true test of a majority party is how it handles its deadweight. Usually the majority party can jettison said deadweight without risking their majority status, even if the seat falls to the other guys. They bring down the quality of the overall party, and that party is better off running them out of town and finding a more respectable representative. Give the opposition as few valid reasons to attack you as possible.

I know of a couple seats I'd regard as 'deadweight': Murtha, Jefferson and Reid. Rangel I can take or leave; if enough people figure him as deadweight, I'll knock him out too. (Mahoney I was glad to see lose; we could afford to bleed that seat if it meant Mahoney didn't drag the party down.) There are likely some others, but for now I'll focus on those three or four and we'll go from there.

Shvetz 2008-11-26 01:18:15 PM
vonster: Both parties need to clean up on a whole bunch of deadwood. On either side, we secretly know who they are, even if we don;t admit it to each other.

That's not going to happen any time soon for Democrats. I'm a NY Dem, and I'd be surprised if this negatively affected Rangel. It's just not going to happen.

Rangel farked himself by supporting Hillary to the bitter end.

He's doomed if the ethics panel investigates the Nabors Industry bribe.

trippdogg 2008-11-26 02:26:36 PM
Okay, I'll take all the charges at face value - so how much are we talking about? Maybe $100,000 or something like that. Not a whole lot of money, but it's still illegal and he should be held to book for it.

Now on the other hand, we have the Bush administration that has slotted hundreds of billions of dollars of no-bid contracts to Haliburton and other defense contracters (with whom they have direct ties) and over a trillion dollars to the banking and insurance industries (with whom they have direct ties), all of which is unaccountable to the taxpayers.

First, there's the matter of scale:
$100,000 = bad
$1,000,000,000,000 = worse

Second, there's the matter of accountability. Rangle will have his day in court and will be held accountable for his misdeeds; whereas no one is even talking about holding the Bush administration to task for what is at best criminal mismanagement, and at worst, a misappropriation of taxpayer dollars on a colossal and never-before-seen scale...

When Hugo Chavez was calling George Bush the devil, he recinded an invite to his church. He also said Hugo Chavez had no place to criticize our president. He might not agree with him but he was his president and noone was going to come to this country and trash him. It was not Chavez' place.
