I am uncertain as to why this is 'spiffy'.

Is it enough of "Sign of" headlines?

A couple of thoughts:

1) I bet they're kicking themselves for not charging a dollar a head admission;

2) The word "gleaning," in this context, is sort of creepy; and

3) this:

the Colorado State Patrol issued citations for cars illegally parked on the side of the road.

made me chuckle.

I think "spiffy" is a description of the farmers and or the actual idea.

Yes, I understand that. It still sounds creepy.

This is exactly the meaning of the word.

In fact, this is how all farmers are instructed to operate in the bible. The idea that this is rare in this supposedly very christian state is kind of sad.

It's 2008 and America isn't fit to be in charge of it 's own socio-economic environment.

I wonder if the founding fathers saw this level of graft and corruption on the horizon.

I guess some folks did get charged for their free veggies.

I thought it was "beneath" Americans to go into a field and pick vegetables. This is the kind of job Americans "just won't do."

Well, to our credit the we've been pretty good at persecuting gays recently, so at least we're doing SOMETHING biblically.

I dunno, when I went to college, it was an agricultural area. Every farm had a trailer and a coffee can nailed to it. Toss in 5 cents and help yourself. It got me through school. Few that I knew qould drive past Wegmans.

the rule is when you start seeing people selling fruit on the side of the road, the economy is in trouble. we are getting closer.

ScottRiqui [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 06:04:53 PM
The story reminded me of small communities where home growing/canning is a popular hobby. It's not uncommon to end up with more than you need at the end of the season, and since many of your friends neighbors are doing the same thing, it can sometimes be difficult to give away the excess. They joke that if you leave your car unlocked, you might come out the next morning to find a basket of squash in your front seat.

planes 2008-11-23 06:06:38 PM
And, of course, the Colorado Highway Patrol did what it could to help people in need and short of money:

Weld County sheriff's deputies helped direct traffic and the Colorado State Patrol issued citations for cars illegally parked on the side of the road.

What a bunch of ass-holes. Governor? Are you going to be on the phone Monday morning cancelling-out those tickets?

Since when is Colorado "supposedly very Christian"? I always thought it was 33% hippies, 33% ranchers, 33% government workers, and 33% Mormons.

People always sell food on the side of the road where I live. But perhaps our economy has always been in trouble.

ScottRiqui: The story reminded me of small communities where home growing/canning is a popular hobby.

I can food too. I've got some nice red chile stew. Plus everyone is getting homemade cranberry jam for Thanksgiving or Christmas this year. Last year was peach. It's a good way to deal with fruit that's on clearance at the grocery store.

TheRedMonkey 2008-11-23 06:13:04 PM
And think of how many of these veggies will rot in the fridge since they interviewed people picking 10 bags worth.

We have a volunteer group around here that will glean the fields for food banks.

Lee Bruns 2008-11-23 06:13:09 PM
I've never seen a carrot farm but around here we have lots of potato farming. The harvest process leaves a LOT of potatos in the field to rot. Most farmers discourage people from grabbing the left overs out of fear that it will ruin the market for their harvested product. Nice to see a farmers willing to take the risk. Times are tough all over.

wildcardjack 2008-11-23 06:14:54 PM
He estimated some 600,000 pounds of produce was harvested Saturday.

Okay, how does that translate as a % of the primary harvest? I mean, it's nice to let people give your field a second go but you should be getting most of it on the first pass.

Kevin72, thanks, now I need eye bleach.

I'm going to start canning. My peppers, I just freeze, but the tomatoes drive me crazy. I couldn't give them away fast enough, but I'm going to start canning them after one jerk off at work had the audicity to tell me when I should bring tomatoes in and and told me to make them firmer next time. Now I won't bring tomatoes to work any more. Fark em, beggers can't be choosers.

Der Vassermeister 2008-11-23 06:23:17 PM
A few years back, I had a pair of snow tires in good shape that I couldn't use anymore. I left them by the curb with a "FREE" sign on them. They hung around for over a week. Then I got this idea. I put a new sign on them "$25". They vanished that very day.
