How about start making policy from the aspect of young people will drink lots of alcohol regardless of what's on or in the container, and somewhat irrespective of the cost of the product. It's a phenomenon you can see almost anywhere in the civilized world. If you accept that young people will drink a lot, and don't need marketing to tell them to do so, you might get a handle on issues such as binge drinking.

Well duh... It's always been about the bang for buck when you're young.

As for the one comment currently on the article.. I always thought that related to hookers, not alcohol... but I guess it could carry over.

Same with my Stroh, you can only have so much 160 proof rum before you feel it...I can usually keep a bottle of that for forever. That and not many other drink it.

Grain alcohol is clearly the most cost effective means by which young kids can get sloshed. In college, a few of us would make a trip to West Virginia (from Pittsburgh) every few weeks and stockpile the stuff. The best concoction is simply grain + blue Powerade mix, in whatever ridiculous proportions you see fit. Mmmm. Fill a water cooler or five with that, and you've got yourself an infinite party.

A half gallon goes for about $45 IIRC, and it fuels far more drinking than, say, 3 cases of shiatty beer.

/Can't use WV any more, they have since stopped selling the stuff
//Maryland still sells it :)

FTFA:

Products have emerged called "malternatives" that are brewed and taxed like beer, but have the sweetness of an alcopop. Ms Roxon yesterday said Treasury, the Australian Tax Office and the Health Department said it undermined the Federal Government's binge-drinking strategy.

The technical term is "biatch brew".

Not usually, I have had it occasionally at tailgates with coke, but I usually take it straight. I was working at a bar this summer, and would have bachelor parties come in asking for free alcohol. I would match the bachelor shot for shot, but the bachelor never made it past one, and I would forget to get him a chaser...

price first (under $10)
check alcohol content (14% is great, but 13.5% will do)

and you'll have a great wine everytime!

What's wrong with not wanting to be forced to drink 10 beers to get a buzz? I would rather drink a few good beers with 6+% alcohol than some shiatty MGD 64 with 2.8% alcohol.

Yeah, MGD 64 is 2.8%. It's not low cal if you have to drink 20 of them to get drunk.

Yeah, first night I was at the bar some of the guys on the staff said we were doing a shot of rum, they would do this with all of the girls and I asked if it was Stroh (it is an Austrian bar) and they said yes, kinda disappointed. They got confused when I got really excited, becasue they figured out that this 4'11" was a little more then they thought they would have to bargain with

I like it when idiots try to argue that the 80 means proof, not percent. As if I didn't grow up with the stuff. Thats when the shots get broken out. They definitely aren't bad, as long as you know how to breathe.

I wouldn't do it to everyone. There are seriously people out there though who would think that the place owed them, and having to wait on them and usually a few other tables in the dinner hour in two different languages could get old. I have as much sense of humor as the next person, and want people to have a fun time. But there is that occasional group who feel like they are invincible and you do not deserve their respect.
