I drove in as our local Walmart opened this morning and picked up a copy.

All I can say is that while there were a few songs I didn't care much for, the overall production quality of the album is amazing, and there are some great tunes.

I'm a diehard GnR fan and was disappointed after hearing some of the leaks. The leaked songs sounds much, much better on this album - speaking of which, "Better" is a great tune.

Finally...

You can download a coupon for a free Dr. Pepper from the Dr. Pepper website, though getting through is like trying to score a Bag o Crap in a Woot!-Off.

JonnyG 2008-11-23 01:26:55 PM
For those getting this, I would not expect to hear anything very reminiscent of the original GnR.

Like many have said, it does sound like a "last hurrah" type of album and as expected is produced up the wazoo.

I will definitely grow to love this album, but in fairness, that could be because I am crazed fan.

There's the real story. The CD is only supposed to be available at Best Buy. Hmm...

Listened to some 30 second previews on iTunes last night and was amazed at how cluttered 'Catcher in the Rye' is.

Is he (I can't call G N'R a band anymore) simply trying to replicate the neurosis and insanity of the book, or is he incapable of erasing previous tracks when overdubbing?

I counted 427 simul-guitars and 15 Axls. It's like a whole new 12 days of Xmas.

echoshizzle 2008-11-23 02:36:53 PM
Love the album, and apparently a lot of the critics do too.

Much better than what Velvet Revolver put out, but I can't say I wouldn't love to hear Slash on some of these tracks.

motherbuster 2008-11-23 03:01:29 PM
"Scraped" is one of the best straight-forward rock n' roll songs I've ever heard. That being said, does any music hobbyist out there have a way of taking instrumental tracks from the Velvet Revolver albums, isolating Axl's vocals from "Chinese Democracy," and then creating a mash-up of true Guns N' Roses magic? You'd be a god if you pulled it off.

jicon 2008-11-23 03:14:17 PM
I want my ten bucks back. Really hoping for some semblance of blues chain smoking rock, instead, we get songs with 12 different guitars, Axl's voice distorted thru ProTools, and late GNR tricks - piano and symphony. No thanks.

Only in the United States. It's available anywhere music is sold in Canada.

It actually isn't a bad album, so long as you aren't looking for anything earth shattering or life altering.

Now that comment right there just made it less likely that I'll bother. I don't buy music because I want to be amazed by the production quality. I want good music. If the production quality was even noticeable, then the music must not have been that great.

Or you're a production geek, in which case the music wouldn't have mattered anyway.

You can not judge this album by clips. It takes a few listens and a place in your heart for the UYI albums to really appreciate what it is.

Uh, I can judge, because I've heard enough to decide what's good, and what isn't. 3 or 4 songs tops. The rest is new agey garbage.

That's almost like saying you hate the mona lisa, because you only saw 1/4th of it.

Music is an art at least give the artist the satisfaction of listening to it as a whole and not parts before throwing opinions.

Yeah, if they just isolated axl then got the rest of GnR in a studio to lay down music over it I bet it would have been 10x better.

Most albums arent that great when you first hear them, I hated In Utero at first listen but then I kept listening and heard music that wasnt there before, its probably one of my favorite albums. Also most bands would love 3 or 4 good songs off their 4th album, most bands really suck by then, well at least now they do and most of the emo bands suck immediately but sell cause of the image.

Im sure this album will let me down though, I wanted slash and izzy, still Better does sound like a good song and I cant wait to hear the album version.

So, what your saying is that, in at least that respect, it's like every other album anyone has ever put out? :)

It's always a fan who appreciates an entire album. This is nothing new.

The last band that released an album that I fully enjoyed from front to back was The Trews - a great Canadian band.

But yes, I can see what people are saying with the overdoing it. Several guitars, several vocal tracks, etc - It's UYI on a bit of crack.

As with any act, you have to have a taste for it to enjoy it all.

When it comes to Dr Pepper, yes, I do.

No, I'm just mad because the whole way they went about it was ridiculous. You have to log into the website and then it appears that they MAIL you a coupon. I can't even get past the registration screen. Clearly they were not prepared for the demand. They shouldn't make a promise if they can't keep it!

The 128kbps "previews" that have been floating around for over a week now, do absolutely NO JUSTICE WHATSOEVER to the actual album. The sound quality difference is farking amazing. I've been listening to the 128kbps stuff since last Tuesday, and popping that CD in and pressing play, is like listening to an album i'd never heard before.

I don't know what you get exactly, a free can or 2-liter of Dr. Pepper? Did they go so far as to offer a free 12-pack?

Are you so cheap that you're going to complain when it's not working the way you want it to? What is the cash value of this "prize"?

One_Cent_Tenth_Spatula 2008-11-23 07:14:28 PM
runfaster21: I don't know what you get exactly, a free can or 2-liter of Dr. Pepper? Did they go so far as to offer a free 12-pack?

"*A SINGLE SERVE IS EITHER A 16 OZ., 20 OZ., OR 21 OZ. OF DR PEPPER OR DIET DR PEPPER. Allow 4-6 weeks for coupon to arrive. Coupons will expire on Feb. 28, 2009. Limit one coupon per person."

So, better than a can, but not as good as a 2-liter, but at least you do get some options.

If you can't get through on the website, you can call 1-800-696-5891 and give them your mailing info (just did, so it does work). You're just gonna be on hold a while.
