And this was obviously an "insta-green".

Does this mean they are going back to reporting the weather?

Bummer about Schwartz, though. He was my favorite.

Yeah, the outlook's kind of hazy for what was once a front-line team of investigators. I don't know weather it was a politically motivated call or just the sinking of their cold cash assets, but I hope they can all find a warm reception in other positions within this rapidly-cycling bank of topics.

Good. Heidei Cullen was sleeping with Jim Hansen, but has nothing to do with climate science. Her next job will probably involve taking her clothes off.

I haven't been watching lately....who's the latest knocked-up Weather Channel meteorologist?

I swear there's something in the water at that place.

Dave Schwartz? That guy was the last of the old-timer batshiat crazy guys. He was awesome. The channel had already been blanded out of any actual character or flavor. Now they're axing Forecast Earth? Watch their ratings fall even further.

AlphaNumericus 2008-11-23 04:44:49 PM
matt120784: Promise?????

I heard from the folks I know at Lamont that when Heidi was a grad student there, talking her out of her clothes was not challenging at all. But she mostly slept with Jim to promote her career.

I always liked seeing Heidi Cullen on screen; her comments were on target about the issue of the moment and I liked the way she looked in her jeans. Cheryl Lemke was on there from the start, it seemed, I guess they figured it was time to cut some of the older meteorologists loose. Her time kept getting reduced until she was only on-air after 11:00 pm on weekends.

So they're cutting the "Forecast Earth" segment but keeping "When Weather Changed History" and whatever they're calling that segment where Cantore shows up at some out of the way location?

Although I hate to see TWC bought up by NBC, I'm elated to see Forecast Earth gone; I couldn't change the channel fast enough.

I wonder if the Weather Channel Fertility Clinic will continue though?

Human gestation isn't fast enough for a television drinking game, but dammit if those women weren't childbearing within six weeks of their first time on camera.

What happened to Global Warming??????

Schwartz was my least favorite of the crew. He always came across like a car salesman.

Now, where are all the people who shout about liberal media bias?

Cannot have dissent in an Obama administration. This is probably to make way for a more propogandized news coverage to brainwash the masses about Global Warming.

Ow My Balls 2008-11-23 06:13:35 PM
I hate how TWC has to put extra-curricular programming on there to grab ratings from non-weather people. I've lost count of how many times I've wanted to see the radar (when the computer's not available to me for whatever reason) and a goddamned "special" is on instead.

My wish is for them to just do hard weather reporting, and to 'nerd it up' quite a bit too. To hell with the casual farking fans!

/tired of EVERYTHING being dumbed down to attract $$$ from non-core fans - sports, music, etc.

Ow My Balls 2008-11-23 06:56:33 PM
Oh, and BTW fellow farkers, if you google "Kristina Abernathy" and scroll just a little bit, you'll see a wonderfully NSFW picture. I had to hurry for a peek since my wife's in the room...

Ow My Balls 2008-11-23 06:57:18 PM
Heh...I forgot to add that it's not Abernathy whatsoever. In fact, I was wondering what it had to do with her.

loral 2008-11-23 07:16:16 PM

Geesh... Dave Swartz was the only weatherman that made that channel interesting.

He had a lot of energy, and great presentation.

Maybe all those weather girls getting pregnant all the time taxed their health benefits causing the cuts... who knows...?

cirby 2008-11-23 07:26:37 PM
Now they're axing Forecast Earth? Watch their ratings fall even further.

I hate to break it to you, but Forecast Earth and all of the rest of that sort of crap is what makes me tune the Weather Channel out. Most of the rest of their programming is pretty thin, too, and ought to be axed. If Forecast Earth was pulling in decent ratings, it'd stay on the air. It doesn't. We get all of that info from every other news source.

TWC. The WEATHER Channel. I want to turn the TV on and see Local on the Eights, along with actual forecasting, not more global warming blather, or heavily-padded History Channel rejects about how weather happened to show up at certain times in history.

TWC has been in decline for some time now. NBC will simply finish them off sooner rather than later.

It's really too bad. The idea of a full time weather channel is such a good one. But somewhere along the way they forgot that the reason that they exist is the WEATHER! They never really figured out what TV weather can do that Internet weather can not. They tried all the stupid "When Weather Changed History" and "It Could Happen Tomorrow" type programs but that's not WEATHER!

Give me the weather and don't dumb it down. I want to know about the jet stream, El Nino and Alberta clippers. If you just give me a basic forecast, I'll go on line for it instead. You have a huge number of skilled meteorologists. Use that skill in presenting and explaining the complexities of the WEATHER to us!

"Forecast Earth" could have been excellent and could have actually turned into a wonderful science program. It could have made the complex science behind climate change more accessible to the average person without dumbing it down. Instead it is pitched at the level of a 6th grader and talks about organic produce and green building technology.

/Now what's all this about Heidi Cullen's jeans?

I am surprised by the talent layoffs as well as the complete lack of curticy by firing the SPECIFIC people you are using for that SPECIFIC week.

Even though I don't get it, there are a LOT of travelers that use it on a daily basis

8/27/07 TWC Press Release
Companies today announced a multi-faceted campaign dubbed "Forecast Earth - Going Green At Work" to further bolster the company's support of environmental and climate matters. As part of the campaign, the all weather network has incorporated such initiatives as designing their new HD Studio according to the guidelines from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) organization, eco-friendly cafeteria serving ware, recycling programs for office supplies and changes to heating and cooling systems for energy conservation, among others.

"The decision by The Weather Channel to take environmental leadership in the workplace has its roots in the stand on the climate and the environment taken by the network several years ago," said Debora Wilson, president of The Weather Channel Companies. "Constructing a new facility in a way that is environmentally responsible sends a strong message about our commitment to helping people learn more about the issues that the public faces in regards to the environment. We are extending our ongoing mission of keeping our viewers informed and safe during severe weather to a similar role in regards to matters of safety and well-being for life on this planet."

Debora Wilson is an ignorant biatch. All we want is the farking forecast. If we wanted a sermon, we'd go to church.

I am so sick of NBC launching these "Green Weeks". Doesn't anyone get that GE owns NBC and GE has significant investments in alternative energy? It's just their way of marketing through feelgood and fear appeals simultaneously.

you just now figured this out? MTV is owned by Viacomm, which doesn't do much beyond the entertainment industry. No wonder they haven't been pushing green as aggressively to our youth as NBC-Universal.

Although I agree with his plan, Boone Pickens is effectively doing the same thing by pushing for more CNG and wind energy in his advertising campaign. He stands to profit from it.

Perhaps the underpants gnomes can finally identify step 2... control the media.

Americans willingly buy SUVs despite both the financial and environmental shortcomings of such a terrible choice. It's not a nation that will intelligently take care of global warming without government intervention.

No, morons who happen to be Americans buy SUVs despite not needing them or thinking about the true financial obligations.

The rest of us try to drive a bit more sensibly, but sure appreciate you lumping us in with the mouth-breathers.

As for government intervention? Yes, that always works out so well. Surely you don't believe that as soon as Bush leaves the helm that the competent bureaucrats are going to come out of the woodwook.

Heidi Cullen is a fascist.
Given the chance to recant her fascist statements made at the public podium, she instead restated and further expounded her fascist belief system.

Yet she hasn't been officially fired from the TWC, yet two of the original TWC meteorologists, Schwartz and Lemke, get the axe.

Heidi Cullen is an open and proud enemy of the scientific method. She despises science. She should not be a public persona.

What a biatch.

Which sort of gets me back to a good response to people who argue against taxes by saying, "I know how to spend my money better than the government does; don't you?" My response is, "Well, most the time, but have you seen what these other idiots spend their money on?" My guess is that the average person, when presented with the choice of spending money on either a.) improvements to keep a bridge on their land from caving in or b.) hookers and blow, and they didn't have government intervention or the threat of lawsuit if the bridge fell in, it'd be a weekend of meaningless sex and drug abuse for at least half the country, and thousands of collapsed bridges by Monday. You know, sort of the way the government does it, but without the need to get into public office to screw the pooch like that. :->

I'm not sorry to see this happen. People should be aware of the effects of mankind on the planet, from mass extinction to the problems of plastics choking waterways to scarcity of raw materials to...well...any number of things which are bad that can be demonstrated without making shiat up and shouting down anyone who disagrees.
