That's not politically correct, it's stupid.

And by stupid I mean the entire thing. There shouldn't even be a statue for that guy.

British: This man engineered the feat of blowing up German dams. Let's acknowledge that sad fact in the descriptive plaque.
Germans: No way! That was awesome! Sucked for us, yeah, but still awesome

I sometimes think that the "nanny state" meme gets overused a bit.

And then I'm proven right.

What about a statue for the Dam Busters Squadron dog? With his name engraved on the bottom. That's what I'D like to see.

I don't see why they should be offended. "Infamous" just means "more famous," right?

He said: "After the ceremony I confronted the man who worded the inscription. I and many of the people who attended the ceremony would not regard the raid or the invention as infamous.

"All he said was: 'You would if you lived in Germany.'"

I would have just popped him once in the mouth for saying something so stupid.

"You would if you lived in Germany"??? That asshole deserves a cockpunch. Not many Germans particularly support the third reich, retard.

I was worried that was what the article would be about.

Thought this might be a case of people mis-using the english language, but the last sentence pretty much killed that idea. I'm not someone who gets their panties in a wad over political correctness, but this is pretty petty.

Wow so no England is taking into account the feelings of the nazis they beat? Hey remember that guy Hitler, that made everyone's top 5 most evil people ever list? Well be gotta be careful about how we honor the heros who kept him from killing more. Wouldn't want to offend anyone...ya know?

I want to personally pummel the man who worded the plaque. Then I want to do to him what the Germans did to the Jews. What a douche.

tortilla burger 2008-11-23 12:22:34 PM
Ok, fine. He did a heroic thing. But it seems to me it'd be pretty easy to write the description with only the facts. That seems to be the fairest way to do things.

Neil Cavuto thinks "the biggest" and "penultimate" are synonyms.

Did Neil Cavuto write this offensive plaque? Does Cavuto really hate veterans?

My question really is...if what he did was "infamous..." why is there a statue? I don't think German has many big, YAY HITLER, HE SUCKED!!111 statues. Most statues aren't designed to say "Hey, look at this douche, what a douche, you douche. DIAF."

Yeah, it sucked for anyone on the floodplain, but I'm pretty much okay with recognizing the valor of anything short of the firebombing of Dresden. Hell, even the Enola Gay crew, that's a heavy burden for a couple of guys to have to carry. I kind of wish since we were still almost a full year off from any sort of ground invasion the government had held off on deploying nukes, but I can see how that call was made. The firebombing...eh...not so much. That was just pure Sherman's March Shock and Awe heads on pikes ugly. This guy, he found an ugly way to deal with an ugly problem, but he did it with a certain amount of panache.

Yep. Not enough people in this world get punched in the nose -- that's why there's in increase in the number of people willing to say things which are manifestly stupid like that.

I'm going to run for governor or something on the "Buzz Aldrin rule" platform. People who get punched in the nose after saying something particularly stupid will not be able to bring charges against the puncher.

The amusing thing is that Germany forbids the discussion of Nazis like the Japanese forbid references to World War 2 and how big they enjoyed being amoral arrogant mass-murdering dickheads. Gee, I WONDER WHY? Funny how England, Ireland, the United States of America, Sweden, and the Russians are not utterly "no comment" on their moral certainty against the maniac Germans and Japanese.

Funny how Italy has no problem mentioning World War 2 and has no dipshiat fanclub of "World War 2" reenactment posers running around in dippy outfits with pretend guns.

In short, that means the Italians have a leg up on "The Axis of Evil" in general terms of not being utter douchebags after the fact.

As I point out above. I have no problem with the guy. It's the overwhelming human addiction to memorializing everything that I find ridiculous.

Ah yes, the Hollywood-created fantasy world you live in, in which every punch knocks someone out cold, instantly and flawlessly, in front of a cheering crowd of attractive women and admiring men. Be sure to have your clever one-liner at the ready, "The only thing infamous around here from now on will be your ignorance!" As the crowd carries you off, you need not fear reprisal, for everyone in society subscribes to the unwritten rule that when one is bested in a fist fight, they are to immediately concede the issue under discussion and slink off into the shadows, not to be heard from again until the next such encounter, at which time they may show their appreciation of your awe-inspiring manliness by, hat in hand, offering their stammering apology to you between sobs as your buxom showgirls jeer at him and cling affectionately to your bulging biceps.

Get a life, will you? Taking offense is a choice, usually the immature one.

This. Not everything needs to be memorialized. Actually, hardly anything needs to be memorialized.
