South Koreans gobbled up more than 1.3 million tons of kimchi in 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, according to the Agriculture Ministry.

1.3 million tons for 49 million people is about 53 pounds per capita.

That's one hell of a lot of kimchi.

According to ilovepickles.org, Americans only eat about 9 pounds of pickles per capita per year.

it's 'included' with meals....but i see tons of the stuff thrown out all the time. I think there was actually an attempt to cut back on the excessive side dishes and waste at one point...

Just insert a large fan to blow all the polluted air over the DMZ and let North Korea take care of it.

That stuff gets into everything it touches. I've experienced first hand how the stink from kimchi will penetrate, and stay in plastic in a Coleman cooler. It wouldn't surprise me if it contaminated Pyrex glass.

Air quality, hell. I doubt their sewage system can it!

Funny story.

In Korea, when they wipe their asses, they put the paper in a nearby bin, not in the toilet.

That means even western-style toilets are not equipped with the plumbing to handle even a small amount of paper.

I learned this after getting one of the staff toilets at my high school jammed up a few times.

My Platoon Sgt always put the KATUSAs in front of the formation when on a PT run. The Soju and Kimchi sweat fumes were especially overpowering after their payday.

I'm assuming that ilovepickles.com was already taken as a porn site.

That's good to know. I have a trip there in a month. Hopefully the kimchi farts will clear out by then.

My first experience with kimchi was in a Korean restaurant in Manila. Neither my wife nor her brother could eat the stuff -- too spicy. But I'm a Texan! No problem for me. There were, however, some nail marks in the wallpaper next to the toilet afterwards...

THIS

Kimchi and Bulgogi are freakin' awesome!
Hard to find a place that makes Bulgogi correctly.
Toss in some Kim Bob and Gyoza while you're at it.

That's mandu to you.

Compared to Beijing, it's just fine.

Wow, I miss Korean food. I love kimchi so much.

Nothing like riding the "Kimchi Express" from Camp Casey to Camp Hovey.

How is a KATUSA like a cue ball?

My Mother-In-Law is Korean.

She's getting a little too old to cook, so she's finally passing her recipes on to her daughter and me.

Just learned how to make Bibimbap, Kimbap, Bulgogi, Kalbi, mandu (3 kinds), and shrimp egg rolls. My wife can't wait to learn Naengmyun and Jajamyun (I'm not a big fan) and eventually we'll have to learn her kimchi and ggakdugi recipes.

Just had some bulgogi last week. So good.

The merchants would haggle, but you had to catch them as they were opening. They absolutely had to make the first sale of the day, no matter what, some would actually close down if they didn't. Dunno if it was superstition, or whatever there. We made sport of going to Osan, and catching the merchants as they opened up shop. Got some crazy deals, and closed a few stubborn ones. Yeah, we were assholes, but we were young, stupid, and full of ourselves.
