I'll take "Follow-up" for $1,000 Alex.

/I think the guy will make it.

Since it's been posted, follow-up would be the only tag. Fail would be a close second if he does in fact splat.

Will they be streaming this? I've saved up a few snarky comments in the hopes to offend his family in the event of his spectacular fail.

FTA:

"...he's never traveled as far as he wants to Monday - 457 metres."

This is a great reason to test it out in uncontrolled circumstances with no safety net!

Jeebus, this sounds awesome and exciting (and I'd pay to try it), but... jeebus.

(Votes for the FAIL tag)

A bridge spanning it was the site of a deadly stunt in 2003 when a parachute jumper miscalculated and fell.

Good thing he had a parachute then.

Grew up in Kansas, this phrase almost always preceded a Massive Fail Event...

If his jet pack incorporated a back up ballistically deployed parachute, it wouldn't be all that dangerous.

/unless the jet pack shuts down in the "dead zone"

I dunno about the "Asinine" tag. I mean, what kid hasn't wanted to do this kind of thing? And even if he snuffs it, isn't this a pretty interesting way to go? I'd lobby for the "Cool" tag, just for all of those kids who wanted a jetpack when they were growing up.

XxArsenykxX 2008-11-23 11:50:38 AM
Wow, 40 years of jet pack science and we've only improved flight time by 10 seconds. So much for the flying car...

They didn't miscalculated, that's the whole point of base jumping, falling, otherwise it's just standing on the edge of something.

Since no one else is going to do it:
113 km/h and 30 seconds
113,000 m/h and .5 minutes
1883.33 m/minute and .5 minutes
In theory, the guy could go 941.66 m in his 30 seconds. So assuming they aren't fudging their numbers, he could go more than double the necessary distance.

Good luck to him, I have been waiting for my jetpack since I was little.

That's awesome math. Does your jetpack go from 0-113km instantly, too?

What do you mean growing up? I would guess most still want one.

Most of his previous flights have been, potentially, as lethal as a flight over the gorge. He is just as dead on impact after falling from 80ft as 1000ft. He should have a BRS (and probably does, in which case the extra height actually adds a measure of safety).

Meh. I saw Colonel Keds fly over the Unisphere hourly at the 1965 NY World's Fair.

scseth 2008-11-23 12:36:12 PM
FTFA: based on one developed in the 1960s for the military.

The original one could fly for only about 20 seconds.

The new one can go for more than 30 seconds

So, since the 1960s we have added 10 seconds. That doesnt seem too impressive.

Been there. It's a bad-ass gorge, an amazing vertical drop.

"Eric Scott tells the Rocky Mountain News he's never travelled as far as he wants to Monday - 457 metres.

The Royal Gorge is more than 335 metres deep."

I like the way the article is written, as above. Translation: "Well if he doesn't make it, he'll go at least 335 metres...that's more than halfway to his goal!"
